engine change, dont work

i have recently had a engine changed in a 96 brava 1.4i 12v, i believe the replacement engine is slightly older theen the one taken out,

problem is sounds really crap, as though timing is out, mis-firing very badly, any advice?
timing belt been checked number of times now.
do you think ecu needs to be changed to older version? did fiat change the engine in brava before 96 p reg? help please!!!!!!!!!
