Hi All
First post so please be gentle .....

My sister-in-law has a 2001 1.4 BravA and the orange dash lamp with the engine symbol (emissions) has come on, usually constant. Can I ask the car what the fault is, like my Vauxhall via the diagnostic socket? It idles like a bag of spanners although if you rev it, it doesn't seem too bad.

Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome as other wise she want to take it to the local dealers, & I hate lining dealer's (of any description) pockets! ;)

Hi,
The light is the engine management saying there is problem
Well could be loads of things!!
The first port of call would be the maf sensor , this lies between the air filter box and inlet manifold, I may stand corrected by others on the forum as i,m not too sure if the 1.4 was fitted with a maf.
Could be the lambda sensor .
As for working out which one pop down to your local fiat dealer and get a diagnostic check carried out, it will cost you circa £70 but could save hundreds in the long run once you go down the part swapping route.
I will ponder more but to be honest get a diagnostic done first.

Hope you get things sorted.

Im pretty sure your Sister in-law doesn't have a 2001 Brava 1.4. As the 1.4 was thrown out back in 1998 and replaced with a more efficient 1.2 engine.

Your first port of call is ideally a Fiat Diagnostic. If you have the appropiate diagnostic tools you can check the error yourself using the OBDII socket on the car. On the Bravo JTD its located under the fuse box in the drivers footwell.

Im sure the car has an idle control sensor which may or many not help if replaced.

Ah! A 1.2 eh? What do these women know? ;)
So that's it as far as reading fault codes on a Fiat, you've to take them to your local dealer & be fleeced out of an hour's labour for a 2 minute plug in with a code reader. Isn't there a way of shorting out terminals of the diagnostic socket as with a Vauxhall to find out what the car is complaing about?

You can get diag readers off ebay fairly cheaply, i've bought one from there so you can get ones that work.
You would need to have a laptop to take to the car though.

Where are you based? I know a Fiat garage which only charges £40 but that's in corsham.

Thanks.
Corsham? That's Hants isn't it, not too far from Pompey? I'm 250 mile north of you in Bury Lancs ;)

a decent garage will be able to do a diag test 35-40 quid, if you dont fancy going to fiat, however if you jsut start swapping parts this could cost you much more in the long run..

Marea, why settle for less

A friendly Alfa Romeo specialist I sometimes use checked/reset my red fuel injection warning light last year on my Marea for only a fiver. :)

It only took him 5 minutes, as I'd found were the terminal he needed was located and gave him the exact model code beforehand.

if you have an orange engine light, then it is (supposed to be) OBD2 compatible, and any OBD2 scan tool (or any garage) should be able to read codes for you..
