General Emergency! Need to get started!

Went to start the cinq this morning and nothing happened! Didnt even turn over. Can hear a click and the lights dim and stuff but nothing. Tried charging it using jump leads but no difference.

Any suggestions on what it could be?

It is absolutely freezing today and has been for the last few days, but started fine last night!

The reason its an emergency is because i've got my mot tomorrow, and if i don't get it tomorrow then wont be able to get it till new year (as am going away)!

smack the starter motor solenoid with a rubber hammer, and try again.

Not tried to bump it yet, thats my next plan!

Where actually is the starter motor solenoid?

Checked battery, its got 12volts nicely. And Cleaned contacts.
Put in original chip (apposed to mckrik) just to see if it did anything, but no.

Starter motor might be sticking. Put the car in gear and rock it back and forward with the handbrake off, then put in neutral and try starting again. That might free it. If not try giving the starter motor a whack like Arc suggested. Otherwise try bumping it!

what is the voltage on the battery? it needs to be 12.60 i think, if its just 12 i think its dead.

Battery should be 13.8 Volts off load, 12 Volts indicates a dodgy cell, check the Volts drop when the engine is cranking (on a car with a good battery)

Woa, back up there lads.

The battery at 12v having been standing overnight is fine. Its the current thats missing.

Jump start it properly, putting the negative lead onto the block not the battery.

Right update people! Managed to bump start it. Had to wait till my dad came home, as didnt want to push it down a hill and just hope i could jump in, could see it ending up in someone elses driveway

But it bump started no bother, so obv def with the starting system/battery.

Its 12.32volts on it but goes down to about 2 when try to start car!

So i'm guessing dead battery. If it is a dodgy cell will it ever hold enough charge to start? Just need it to start tomorrow for mot then can take my time on it.

When it started i stuck it im my garage and put the battery on charge. I'm guessing will prob need to get a new battery soon enough but most places will be closed by now!

12.32v is fine, if its dropped to 2v when u crank it then something is amiss.. its a current issue - what happens if when its running u knock the key to start. might not be the best dignosis, but if the solenoid is stuck then it wouldnt do anything would it.

Not sure what happens. Will check tomorrow.

Had a mate come round who knows a fair bit and he's sure its the starter motor's shagged. So called a mechanic i know and he's going to have a look tomorrow. Hopefully will be sorted soon enough!

I'm afraid not, going to a guy i know. Mainly because i'm a little bit worried that it wont pass on something and cant afford to pay more money to retest it and all that, so as long as i get a certificate i'll fix whatevers wrong with it in good time! lol

Another question though; it def is starter motor, so looking on ebay for a second hand one (can't be bothered going to scrappy in crap weather! ) Will a punto 60s 1242 1996 starter motor fit the cinq sporting? Not really happy about paying £50/60 for a new one, quite happy with a second hand one!

Not difficult, but a swine to get at. Take the ht lead support off the back of the head, and take the TB off.

Got the new starter motor today and put it in, started no bother. Well pleased!!! Only took a couple of hours to do as well!
