Hi I have a puzzling problem on my 93 1.6 Tempra estate with the electric windows.

Both driver and passenger windows will frequently require repeat operations on the button to get them to go up or down. I can hear the relay 'clicking', when the window stops, but having taken it to bits have found that it is 'non user serviceable'! At the time the relay 'clicks' another relay at the rear also 'clicks' - I haven't tracked it down but suspect possible c/locking for the rear doors. This all suggests a poor connection in the electrical system, forcing the the relays to 'trip' when they draw excess current - but I am not an auto-electrician.

I have heard of the idiosyncracies of fiat electrics - has anyone come across this, or have any good ideas?

The window electronic relay operates on time, if the window mechanisim becomes stiff and slows down the relay times out with the window partially open / closed. I have not had this problem personally with either Tempra on the front windows but have seen it on another. I believe the relay also has a built in cut out for when the window gets stiff. For my cars the windows / wiring / control have been reliable but not the central locking. The locking and window circuits are seperate, and neither should interfere with the other.

Look for dirt / dust in the window guides, damaged guides in the frame, also the window motor / gearbox mechanisim may need greasing. I have had on a rear window where water got into the gearbox and it needed stripping and grasing to free it up.

I have had this exact same problem which was caused by my car being outside in all weather and the glass becomes stiff in the edge guides. You can fix this quite simply without need for removal by spraying in the edge grooves with WD40 and powering the window up and down a dozen or so times. It should eventually slide right up and right down in one smooth movement, Obviously the passenger side gets less use and so may well be the worst offender.:)
