EGR To have or not to have?

EGR To have or not to have?

Obviously everyone has forgotten all those years of smog choking up the air around our cities as cars pumped out buckets of carbon monoxide and acid rain as a result of sulphurdioxide emissions. Power plants and factories aren't allowed huge emissions any more than many other industries, even huge ships have restrictions on what they can pump out, not that you often see huge ships clogging up cities with exhaust fumes.

I'm also confused, on one hand people say its a pain when the egr clogs up as performance suffers and fuel economy drops and they have to clean it to make all well again, yet the way to fix this is effectively clogging the egr with a blanking plate, if you don't clean the deposites out left from the egr than a blanking plate will make no difference as the intake system is still being choked up its just now the hot exhaust gasses won't be able to burn any of it away.

Another point forgotten is that unlike a petrol engine the diesel engine engine is more suited to constant speed and load. This is where maximum performance, efficiency and clean burn is achieved. e.g. on ships, power generation plants, some trains, etc. They are from ideal for wide band automotive use.

So to get a clean burn with wider performance profile we have to bolt all the other add-ons like swirl valves to cater for low air intake velocities, vacuum cleaner bags to trap soot, etc. etc.

Another factor to consider is our ever increasing congestion/traffic flow problems. This means that it is increasingly difficult to run ANY engine in any way near constant/ideal way.

It kind of scares me as to where this mess is going to end up.

or maybe the combustion engine as we know it is reaching the end of it's lifespan......anyone lowered a battery powered car yet?

I've been hearing that the last 20-30 years all the time.....!
I have a son, who's 8 yrs now, I strongly believe, in the future, he will drive the same engines like today ( and yesterday).....!
With the help of computers and electronics of course...!

The burning of fossil fuel is big business, millions of £'s every second globally.

There's no way it will end in my life time so yes the near future will see internal combustion engines still being used.

I'd expect them to have all sorts of weird and wonderful gadgets strapped onto them to reduce emissions and increase power but they will still be used.

Crankcase vapours firstly oil up the turbo then mix with the EGR gases causing the manifold and head to tar up, killing your fuel consumption and performance, hense more fuel used at great expence to the consumer, Oil giants win we loose. Was the EGR valve the oil industies idea.

Not necessary.
My 2004 Alfa GT jtd, with the 1,9 Fiat Diesel engine, with turbo and egr has done 231.000km's now ( 145.000mls) with original turbo and egr...!!
But it is used on long trips everyday, I use synthetic Castrol motoroil and run cleaner Shell V-Power Diesel, I also use a fuel additive once in a while...!
Oh, and yes, I have the restricted gasket on my EGR since about a month...!!
Fuel consumption is by the book.!!

  • Options Available
  • (REMOVAL of the following):

EGR: We can safely and correctly remove the EGR operation from your ECU, without the need for you to physically remove the valve itself so there are no tell tale signs that it has been done.

    BEWARE:
A great many unscrupulous so called "Remappers" are just turning off the EGR fault code system so that the fault light doesnt come on the dash for EGR problems anymore. This leaves the system trying to use the valve and in time can damage the engine quite significantly.
Do it once... do it properly!

    DPF:
    • Diesel Particulate Filter Removal (DPF Delete)
    • Are you having problems with your Diesel Particulate Filter?
    • Are you facing some very expensive repairs?
    • Are you sick of the extremely poor MPG your vehicle returns whilst the DPF is regenerating?
    • Do you want to remove the troublesome DPF from your vehicle altogether?
    • If the answer to at least one of the above questions is yes, then we can alter the software in your ECU so that your DPF can be safely and properly removed from the vehicle without logging any error codes. We do this process properly and stop the ECU trying to regenerate in the future.

    • Benefits of diesel particulate filter removal are::
    • Better Performance
    • Increased MPG
    • Avoid Expensive Repair Costs

    • Most vehicles fitted with a DPF will need to have it replaced at some point as part of the service schedule if it has not already become overloaded in the meantime, this can be very expensive indeed.

Live ECU Mapping:
During live mapping, we will attach an emulator to the ECU and actually access the information within it whilst the engine is running and the ECU is in use. This is the ultimate form of mapping and usually gives far more accurate results than simple chipping or remapping and is usually quite a lot better than a custom mapping session too because we can adjust the data at the same time as the ECU is supplying results to the engine and so can assess the results in real time. This is doubly true for those engines that have strayed from the norm and are now utilising up rated cams, ported heads, altered compression ratios etc.

£75 extra to delete the EGR i might just get it done

These proper professional remaps are all very good but I have one major issue with them. INSURANCE. Some insurance companies will refuse to quote. Others will hike the insurance cost by a minimum of 20% and many very much more.

Having a remap (or any other mod) and ignoring one ever had it done it is actually turning you and yor car into uninsured projectiles.

The insurance industry and their assessors got wise to remaps and other mods when the Ford Sierra Cosworth hit the streets. Now most specialist assessors have all the kit, manufacurer ECU checksums, etc. to rapidly detect ECU remaps.

I hate much of this modern ill thought out but still delivered "green" technology which is far from green and not wallet friendly.

Tread carefully.
