Hi guys, my 1.3 G Punto multi-jet broke down last week! the green flag man told me the error code was for the fuel rail pressure sensor, i have changed this and this has cured the lurching and fuel starvation but the management light is still on and i have limited performance.

I disconnected the battery for 24 hours and this did clear the fault until i touched the accelarator then the light and ltd performance returned.
Before i throw more money at the problem does it need a reset? i am getting conflicting information.

The car is a 08 plate.

the ecu reset procedure has and must be done using software and nothing else, also by disconnecting the battery is probably done more harm than good to be honest, in order for your engine light to go away you must use the (rest all perameters) function within the programme if using fiatesucscan or multiscan plus it has to be a registered fully working software and not a trial version. if you dont have the software or how to do it yourself you will need to book it in and have it reset at the dealers im afraid. so basicly anyone who says disconnect the battery to reset an ecu on a fiat is completely wrong yes it will put most functions back to learn but the software itself will actually clear the eeprom with any stored perameters so that the car will start to learn from scratch again.

Another thing thats been in my mind is that i was working in Kidderminster and was low on fuel, the last garage before the M6 for home was a garage called Harvest fuel, i filled up with 60 quids worth of fuel and ever since then i have had 2 breakdowns and low fuel pressure....coincidence?

ive only heard of bad diesel in the past.... but it wouldnt hurt to check it as for the reset its a yes because there are soo many sensors comunicating with the ecu from voltage signals that putting it into simple terms its like a pc behaving strange due to having a conflict in hardware settings one will try to stop the other and so on...so we tend to uninstall then reinstall and all is ok again same principle for an ecu eeprom it behaves like a storage device but you cannot get rid of a tiny malfunction in it hence why the reset clears it all so the ecu does not pick up any signal errors.

Cheers BB, i have a feeling that i wasted my money on a sensor, apparently these are a very rare failure and the fault code that points out to the sensor could just mean there is a fault anywhere on the fuel system.

no probs you will always find that someone on the forum has very good experience when dealing with issues of all kinds, some more experienced than others including moderators here too that are very helpfull aswell. i have found that alot of people who have a problem with there car usually try the first thing they are told by someone and off they go and spend money on parts when they clearly didnt need it in the first place. i have been repairing cars for about 25 years and will not allow a garage or dealer to come within 2 feet of my cars unless i have absolutley no other choice. i now do all my own mot work from ecu diagnosing to welding and so on.

My advice to you and many others is simple... if you want to you can do it just do the research, learn and practice and over time can save you a fortune.

I think you can take a obd2 code reader to diagnose where is the problem.

Keeps coming up fuel sensor, had a reset at the dealers and fault came straight back. Still running on ltd performance but I have done over 1k in miles with the fault. I am going to check all the hoses and unplug all the connectors and sensors and clean and reconnect. I may as well do the cheapest route first, it could be something daft like a loose connection. One thing I did notice was when I removed the air filter box the glow plugs cabling protection has been rubbed away by the filter box.

Well still have the fault! I have now done over 2k of miles and runs fine apart from the lack of power, even starts fine. Looking for a second hand fuel pressure regulator to try that fix.
