General Easy wheel fitting tip

Easy wheel re fitting tip. For the last few months my knee has been playing up, the other day when removing my wheels i found difficulty trying to line up the stud holes, then locating the wheel stud really annoying, even though the 13" alloy wheels are light. So the answer i came up with was to cut 2 x 6 inch 17mm top (same thread as standard wheel nuts) bolts down so one end still has the thread & the other end is plain i then slid some heat shrink plastic over the plain end for a better finger grip. When I go to refit the wheel just finger tight the new stud into an opposite stud holes, it then makes it 100 times easier to locate your holes on the wheel. Obviously don't forget to remove them and replace with the correct stud. I have just noticed my wheels are obviously not standard and did to the fact i have disc brakes on all corners i think my wheel studs are also larger than standard, but the principle will work on any size stud.
:)

First class suggestion. I was very lucky; having run one of the service teams in a M/Benz workshop (helped set the garage up from scratch), I called in to see my old lads on a visit back to Felixstowe and one of the lads gave me his spare 'wheel aligning' tool--it was for a M/benz 190---same thread and nicely finished. You will find that some modern cars have the same thread and you can buy these tools on e-bay for just a few pounds---but a nice long bolt will do the job just as well----don't forget to cut the head of the bolt off and smooth the cut edge! The tool is particularly useful for re-fitting rear wheels

I've been using these long bolts for years on my Coupe & my daily driver. I actually bought mine online. Makes things a lot easier as you say, especially if your getting on:sleep:

Hi JB, yes I am 'getting on' but, not as old as some (y)(y)(y)(y)
It does kill my back without them (n)(n)(n)
Ian.

I don't think I'm getting on yet but do just like making life easier whenever possible. Thanks for wheel fitting tip it has been filed away in my memory bank for if ever needed.

Hi BK, I was referring to myself :D I can still laugh at myself at times & Grandpa Simpson comes to mind..:D It doesn't seem that long ago when I could pick the car up, change a wheel & refresh the brakes all at the same time.;) I said on another post, it takes me longer to make the car safe for me to work on as it does to do the job... anything at all major I feed myself pain killers wait to they kick in, then I'm off......
