Just bought an Auto-Trail 2004 motorhome on a Ducato base 2.8jtd. I'm told the engine has been remapped and there does appear to be an extra box under the bonnet but to be honest, I'm a wee bit disappointed in its performance torque wise and pulling up hill. Anyway, any advice/help regarding maintenance or what to look out for would be much appreciated as I don't think there's a Haynes manual for the Ducato yet. Son.

Check to see if it has a K&N replacement air filter, if not that gives them a little boost for about £50

An "extra box" is likely to be an add on tuning box which doesn't do anything but try and trick the ecu into giving the engine a bit more power, you would be better off binning it and taking it to a proper tuner for a proper remap.

The ecu soon gets used to these boxes and will factor out most of the tricks they use in the ecu's calculations

Sounds more like a tuning box but there again, it is usually fitted behind the central black plastic panel just below the windscreen.

I have run a 2003 Ducato 2.8jtd with a Tunit box fitted for the past 5 years. My ECU has not sidestepped the Tunit because it is not capable of doing that on that model.

I bought a K&N Air Filter and found no discernible difference but there again it is a big tag axle van with a 5 tonne MAM. The problem with the K&N filter is that you have to buy a cleaning kit and make a mess of your kitchen sink when cleaning it. Normal paper air filters are cheap as chips and you just throw them away.

The advantage of a decent tuning box (like my Tunit) is that you can set the jumper to give you just a little more power or a decent amount more. The second advantage is that I am changing my van next week and can remove the tuning box and sell it to someone else. You cannot do that with a remap.

On the subject of remaps, get someone reliable to do it, some of them are cowboys. Go on a recommendation from others.

Can u post a pic of this box? If its a 'tuning' box, take the thing off and see how it feels. These things can in no way equal a well programmed remap. A K&N may pay with a remap, but otherwise, stay standard paper- in the case of no remap all you do is have a filter that can be reused but how many paper ones will u get for the price? At best, tuning boxes are a blunt instrument that can give an increase, but lacking finesse. Some are better than others but even so.....
If no difference with it off, bin it!
Pls post back as interest is high in matters thus, apparently.

Most of the tuning boxes will have a few settings but the 2.8 clutch is only good for 315nm or so you'd be shooting your self in the foot trying to overdo it. I'd guess your autotrail is a massive lump and you're expecting it to drive like a car.
