I have had problems during sveral trips in my 2007 Bessacarr E560 motorhome with the Fiat Ducato 2.3 multijet diesel engine stopping suddenly as if switched off. Luckily it always re-started OK but very dangerous as the power steering and brakes disappear!I spent a lot of time and money trying to find and repair the problem but nothing worked. I read on the forums that many people had had the same problem and learned there had been a re-call by Fiat due to a faulty ignition switch problem.I was investigating this when the switch failed completely. I removed it and ordered a new one but when it arrived it had a different steering column diameter of 41mm. The old one is 47mm. I had entered all the requested vehicle details but still got the wrong part. After visiting several parts suppliers sites I found there are several versions of this switch, some with 5 pins some with 7 all offered for the same vehicle details but there are no comments on the steering column size. Can anyone help and tell me how to identify tand order he correct part please?

Have you tried inputting your VIN into ePER (electronic Parts Equipment Register)? See tab at top of page.

Hi, thanks for your reply and I'll try that but I put the VIN number into the suppliers parts searches and still got several types of switch supposed to be suitable for my Ducato. There is insufficient detail in the description of the switches to find the right combination of connection and steering column diameter. Thats my problem. I dont want to keep ordering the wrong part and having to return them.

How do you know it is the ignition switch.
Had a similar problem turned out to be poor earth strap!

Saltpeter,

I have being experiencing the exact same trouble with my 2007 Ducato 2.3 multijet. I have spent thousands of Euro trying to solve the problem but with no success. The ignition issue sounds like it could be the problem. I wrote to Fiat Ireland asking if there was a recall with regard to the ignition. I could not get a straight answer from them. It seems your Ducato was not recalled either. Did Fiat confirm to you that there was a recall? Did replacing the ignition solve your problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the late reply.
I replaced the ignition key switch. This seems to have solved the problem. To overcome the anti-theft device,I removed the circular coil and taped one of the old keys inside it. The engine has not stopped since so I hope it is fixed. The main problemI I had is that the Ducato chassis is 2 years older than the camper so when I used the camper van details to order the replacement switch I was sent the wrong one.
