Went to the supermarket earlier and I couldn't get my GP drivers door open. I had to lower the window down and open using the outside lock.

I removed the door panel and can confirm that the cable is still attached to the back of the handle and the fault seems to be something not engaging inside the lock itself.

Can someone advise if these mechanisms are repairable or are they just replaced if the fail. Whatever has failed seems to be just under the catch that engages with the striker on body of the car.

Removed the lock and inspected it. There's nothing I can do with it because if it goes wrong, I run the risk of damaging it and not being able to keep the door closed at all. :(

Off to the Fiat dealer for a lock on Monday so....

I just had this problem , did you hear a bang or anything like that ?
I got home from work went to get out car and it just went bang and wouldn't open from the inside

Had it replaced with a new unit now works perfect once again

No bang as such Darren, it initially felt like I hadn't gripped the handle hard enough and it slipped through my fingers. The cable was pulling something in the locking mechanism but the lock would not open. Research - and indeed your own experience - illustrates what a common enough problem this is.

I have this car three weeks and have replaced water pump, glow plugs, slave cylinder and need to replace this lock and both rear handles. This is far more than I replaced on my previous car (mk2 Punto) in 5 years of ownership. Not a great start... :(

Hi,

I had this problem about a month ago, new door lock mechanism unfortunately. Pretty easy to do really, took about 30 mins, if that.

I got the part from a scrap yard for £25.00 :D

Hi All,

Even tho this seems to be a common problem, my opinion is that it is a design fault caused by Fiat or the door loack mechanism's manufactures.

I can re-create this problem at any time and over last 5 yrs I've accidently caused it twice.

If you open the door from the inside and at the same time you catch the remotes unlock button the mechanism operates for the that spilt second and the part operated by the inside door handle overlaps and passes the part moved by the central locking and the outside door handle.
Remove the door trim and eventually the lock mechanism itself from the door, you will see at the top of the assembly there is a small hole, if you put a small screwdriver into the hole about an inch and angled towards the latch itself you should feel something that will move - so move it, your parts will now be back in sync and should be OK.

All I can suggest is don't have hold of the remote when you pull the door handle on the inside.
