What effect does drilling holes in an airbox have? I got told it makes it sound almost like an induction kit is fitted. Is this true or total b******s?

Thanks

it dounds a bit deeper but i dont think it gives you any gains.

yeah i just want the sound. i used to have a k&n but sold it (dont know why. i got nothing for it, and miss the sound). i cant find a cone filter that fits under my bonnet without taking the bottom of the airbox out though. if i could, id get one

i have my air box drilled with a k&n panel filter. sounds nice when you put your foot down. i didn;t put to many holes in so im sure it could sound betta.

life is to short to look back

Mate why dont you just do it properly and buy an induction kit

heres what you do, get a k&n panel filter, and run an air feed from ur front bumper to the box, that will give you some gain, and sound a little better, then u drill a couple holes not too many, and that will also let a little bit more air in, not much though...

thats the best way ;)

If you just want the sound effects, simply take-off the original black plastic air intake sturucture and the associated trunking/elbow piece that goes into the front of the standard airbox.

That alone will do the trick without much effort, changing the filter element or spending any money.

of course that has the nasty side effect of letting all the dust and dirt and sh*t into your engine bay. please do not remove your air filter. Also, you'd potentially lose power because you'd only be getting warm air into the engine...

By far the best mod in this area for sound is an induction or second to that, drilling the intake side of the airbox. I'm sure you already know this.

Personally, if i could be bothered, i'd fit a 'performance' panel air filter, and give it a direct air feed from the bumper and seal the feed onto the box. It'd be a bit like forced induction. Wont really affect the induction nopise your lookng for though. not noticeably anyway...

on a re-read, i realise now you actually meant he should remove his stock cold-air intake, and not the actual airbox/filter. It did seem somewhat daft suggesting someone remove an airfilter. My apologies for thinking you were that daft ;) I thought only the 1.8 had that feed though?

As for the original posters question, its true. It does make them sound more like an induction kit is fitted

No worries Buzz, we've all had to do a double-take on someone else's post at some time...

... and of course, I agree that no engine should be run without an adaquate filter.

I only discovered by accident/buggering about that removing all the gubbings forward of the airbox did the induction noise trick on my 2000cc 5 cylinder Marea, (and it sounded quite good at that)
- a friends 1.8 Brava had the same type of standard airbox, but I'm not sure about the other engines.
