Hi guys,

I'm probably going to find some way of making an ass of myself here, cos I know very little about cars, but hey ho... Anyway, my sad story:

The silencer decided to drop off my 1.2, V reg (2000) Punto a few days ago (just out of warranty ;)). Should have noticed the growly sound of the engine the night before, but shrugged and assumed it was my imagination. Anyway, took it to the garage, as you do (not a fiat dealer, I well remember getting ripped off to the tune of £150 for a wiper motor last time I went there), and had a new one fitted ASAP.

A few days later, I notice 2 things:
1) If I look at the end of the silencer from the back of the car, its slanted sideways (I think its the right side that is lower) by about 30 degrees.
2) The middle length of the exhaust in front of the silencer, about 4 feet worth, is not attached in any way to the underside of the car and clanks loudly when I go over bumps.

Point 2 alone is enough to make me take it back to the garage when I get a chance, having learned that things that clank, eventually go clunk and fall off, but I don't know about the angle of the silencer...

Can anyone tell me whether its supposed to be twisted relative to the direction of the exhaust? I'm now seriously wishing I had taken the time to poke around in, and under my car before it started falling apart and work out what it should look like ;) I'm a bit suspicious that they dredged up something for a completely different car and hammered it until it fits...

Can anyone please advise me on whether I should be complaining about the silencer as well as the exhaust? The silencer is, I should mention, solidly fixed, and if not for the wobbly middle of the exhaust, I wouldn't be worrying at all, slant or no.

While I'm at it... the Haynes manuals for Puntos that I can find in stores have a picture on the front which is not the shape of the car I have. Was it just the shape that changed around 2000 (I dunno precisely when it was), or are there internal differences that should make me keep looking for one with a matching picture/year?

Cheers :)

Not sure about the exaust fittings on a mk2 as i have a mk1 don't know if there the same anyway mines out at the moment so cant look at it any way.
But the manual you see in the shop is for a mk1 punto you need a manual for a mk2 punto. try ebay first I got a manual for my sons car on there for £1.

There doesn't seem to be a manual for the Mk2 yet. If you can get under the car, check and see that any lugs or spikes of metal sticking out from the exhaust are connected to the body of the car with a rubber hanger. You can see what they are by looking at how your tailbox or silencer is fixed to the car. I know that the front lug or bracket on the Mk1 used to become detatched from the exhaustand could be re-attatched with a couple of jubilee clips. If this is the case then you have an answer.
