Hello all, I now have the car running great!! Quite a fast car with the 5 speed trans , happy on roads. The dip stick pushes oil from the base. The Stick is a metal piece with a rubber stop. The stop goes in fairly tight but as the engine warms, oil leaks out. What is the fix?? Does an aftermarket supplier exist that has the replacement pieces? I was thinking of soldiering a metal tube in place and raing the stick but not sure of the oil level concerns.

I also finfd the steering wheel not to be centered when driving. How is the wheel centered to align with the wheels?

Thanks for the advise on this great board!

Doc,

Glad to hear that all is (mostly) well.

I've heard that as the rings wear on these cars, the crankcase can be pressurized to the point where the dipstick blows out. Though here, if the dipstick is only leaking oil with an engine that is OK, then you need a new seal. New dipsticks are available from the usual spare parts sources. I fitted one to my engine and the new seal is quite tight.

I guess within reason you've checked to make sure that the sump isn't overfull.

As to your other question, the steering wheel position relies on the correct distance between the Pitman arm and idler. This is adjusted by varying the length of the centre track rod with the wheel in a central position. The two outer track rods are then adjusted so the steering geometry is also correct. I don't have the lengths with me at the moment, but will look them up and post them later or you could have a look through the Haynes manual posted on this site.
