Hi everyone, just moved to Europe recently and its a first time to help my friend out with his van. Seems like he's got some head gasket troubles, his engine coolant is being consumed at an alarming rate, white smoke out of the exhaust, engine running hot. Oil looks good, might be able to take it to a shop for checking for HC's in the engine coolant tank.
In case push comes to shove, does anyone have any experience with replacing the head gasket on one of these? Is it particularly tricky, or rather straightforward (I have done a couple of these repairs on different vehicles). I haven't worked on any diesels before, but the engine bay seems reasonable to work in.
Also, any other common parts that fail which we should replace while taking it apart? We'll probably do the timing belt at the same time.
