Despite what the news has been telling us lately I cant say I'll miss Woolies at all. Rarely shopped in there (always seemed bit pricey?) the only thing I ever remember buying was a Sega Dreamcast cos there was a good deal on where you got a CD album for free with it!

It's weird though, the way that the news is hyping this up (like the credit crunch) and blowing things out of proportion. Yes, folk will lose jobs, and no doubt some customers will suffer. But was it really an institution?

Shame though..in that it's a big name dissapearing from the High Street, how many else will follow next year?

Had vouchers for comet, homebase and woolies.
Went into Comet to get a game for the Wii for my nephew for Xmas. They refused to take them because they were woolies!!

Ended up having getting him a PS3 game out of a woolies that looked like it had been around at the time of the LA riots.

Won't miss it. first time I got anything from there since Killer Instinct on the SNES.

Woolies never found a niche. Their main problem imo was that everything they stocked could be bought cheaper at the likes of Tesco/Asda so they only really had a few products that you could only get in there. If they had made the decision say 5-10 years ago to stick to homewares for example, they might still be around. Went in the other day when this "50% sale" was announced, what a massive lie that was ... anything worth having was only reduced by about 10% and was still more expensive than anywhere else ...

I agree with you there. Everything was always cheaper, even just a few hundred yards away from the store. I mean the one in the Braehead Glasgow always sold dvds and the like for a few quid more than HMV just a short walk away.

Tis a shame I guess, but they priced themselves out of business.

I'm in the retail business myself (for the moment) and we've taken some losses. But relatively decent thinking in terms of pricing and the like has kept us afloat. I'm looking to change my job, but at the moment I'm just happy I've got a pay cheque coming in every month.

Speaking of gift vouchers, hope nobody got any Zavvi vouchers from Santa :(

Yeah, think I heard about this somewhere.

I actually bought some stuff there last minute before Christmas. First time I've bothered buying dvds on the high street for months if not over a year. You get everything so much cheaper online, I'm not surprised at all places like Zavvi are going under like this.
