Hi I am new to the forum. I have a 1998 Ducato 5 birth camper. The ECU fails to recognise the spare key. I do not have the master. My mechanic says it is a wiring fault or the chips in the ECU are fried and it will not recognise the key. The Locksmith's can give me a reprogrammed set of keys for £250 but I still might need a new ECU, Without going to spend £1000 where do I start ?

What engine Series?

1900 Diesel . However it is a wiring or ECU fail issue.
The reason I asked for the Engine Series number which you can get from the Chsssis Vin plate. is that it will help in diagnosing the type of immobiliser system you have.
The reason I am still asking for that number is it will tell me if it is a Peugeot engine or a Fiat engine as both were used in the Ducato.
It is very easy for people to condemn ECUs but generally that is the last thing that is likely.

It is not in Series 1 2 or 3 as the age did did not fit with those categories . Will the engine no have any bearing on an electrical fault or a replacement ECU?

Before it stopped working had any recent work been done on vehicle that may have contributed to failure?
Also still waiting for Engine Series. number.:)
No work has been done to it. It was starting fine and died on the last start. The battery is almost new and turns over no problem. The mechanic got the ECU open and identified a possible fried chip, but not decisive. He says he thinks it is either wiring, the ECU computer chips or the key is faulty. The previous owner will try to find the master key next week. He's on business presently.

You are misunderstanding my point.
The engine Series number relates to the engine manufacturer it has nothing to do with 1,2,3.
Depending on which engine reflects on which injector pump was used and which form of immobiliser etc.
I don't know everything but if you give me the chance I will try to bring the 55 years of experience in the motor trade to help you.

Do you know the dash light symbol that indicates that the immobilizer has not recognised the key?

You have to look at the plate in the engine bay for the engine type/series id number.

Or post the engine cc the type can Then be worked out.
Is it turbo or non turbo too

AA REPORT : KEY LIGHT ON PERMANENTLY WHEN TRYING TO START CHECKED INERTIA SWITH CHECKED ANTENNA, ONLY ONE KEYSO UNABLE TO TRY SECOND , POSSIBLE IMMOBILISER MODULE WIRING OR KEY FAULT. BUT FAULT TRACING LIMITED BY LACK OF INFORMATION ROADSIDE.

Engine Series Number 230A3.000 so Turbo 1929cc engine with a Bosch injector pump number VE-R547
On this injector pump above where the red plastic covers on the outlets to the injector pipes you will see a round solenoid with a single wire if you are lucky and it hasn't got extra security blank over it.:(
If you can see it and same as the photo then check there is twelve volts going to that solenoid, if so then engine should start.
However I had similar on a 305 Peugeot many years ago and the solenoid was faulty and not lifting the pintle needle jet to allow fuel into the injector pump, it should click when ignition turned on. :)
