Hi all,

Please can you help.i was due to collect my 1.9 diesel auto prestigio, when the garage phoned to tell me that there was a problem with a sudden loss of power! This was a shock to me as we had this happen to our last Croma and not even fiat could diagnose has taken place

Guys at garage say its carbon buildup on turbo? The car has done only 44K miles?! Aaaaaarrrrrhhhhhhh pls help

Hello Dave we went through a sudden loss of power with our 150 jtd and that was caused by the old swirl valve trouble on the inlet manifold.A very temporary fix was a really good squirt of wd40 to the top of manifold on the four swirl valves and work them back and forth with a screw driver, they should move with the ignition on and off.
Our car had no warning on the dash and the mileage was about the same ,I changed the manifold £160 plus a Saturday under the bonnet no trouble now and 86k on the clock. The air mass meter trouble can be sorted by cleaning, by capping the end and half fill with meths cap the other end and give a vigorous shake drain and dry off that was four years ago still good.
:)

Regarding swirl valves then I'm not sure they will cause the sudden loss of power in question.

On my Croma the swirl valves do not operate. There is nothing broken/disconnected and I can only assume that Fiat mapped them out before I purchased the car from new as they were known to be an issue. The default valve position is "both intake paths open" and in my case they are both always open.

I'm more inclined to suspect and EGR or other fault to attribute to a "massive loss of power".

My first plan of attack would be to run through the quick checks first - MAF disconnect then boost sensor clean and then egr block off to see if any of those cure / help the problem. Also, just in case check the oil degredation indicator and km's to next oil change as well as particulate filter clogging (you'll need a computer, interface lead and multiecuscan for these checks).

Could carbon build up in the turbo be a problem - it's not one I remember anyone mentioning before?

Hi all, Thanks for the info! Evo, I've bought another one I found, immaculate condition, ffsh, leather, auto lights/wipers, but damn intermittent fault! It's doing exactly what the other one we had did, you can be driving at any speed and suddenly the power drops. Here's what the garage said. "we have discovered an intermittent problem with the boost pressure system in that under acceleration the Croma can loose power and the engine management light comes on. This has been diagnosed as carbon build up on the Turbo nozzle and we need to send the turbo to a specialist repairer to be de-carbonised. Carbon build up is a common fault found on low mileage diesels that have not done much high speed driving"

I'm not convinced by the diagnosis though, I'll go back and mention EGR!

Do a search of the forum for overboot problems. Holes in the rubber pipes from the boost solenoid valve has been known to cause the turbo to over boost causing limp mode on the car and subsequent loss of power.

Bloody proper lovely that is. I'd give the grey leather 3/10, but the beige leather 10/10. It puts the car in a totally different league. The paint colour's probably the best in the brochure too. Well found, hope you didn't pay too much. Dave will be along soon to tell you it's worth £500.

And mine? Grey fabric. Booo.

Hey thanks Doof, I must say I'm really pleased with finding it, been searching for one with the right spec for ages. What's better is I managed to find myself some great accessories. I bought rear mudflaps, chrome mirror caps and a chrome exhaust finisher this morning from Fiat. Fantastic. If you want to see her in all her glory I'll be up at the next Italian car day in the midlands :)

Temp' - what was the part number for the exhaust trim?

Thanks

Hi Evo, found my parts all thanks to Doof posting the accessories brochure on here, I came across it on a google search! Google search "fiat Croma accesories" and you'll find it.

The part number is as below, but note they only did one for the 1.9. I guess your pipes bigger than mine ;)

Exhaust tail pipe
In chrome steel. Specific for the
1.9 MultiJet version. Part No. 50901471
