what would be involved to get a 20v turbo unit working on an UT mk1 or is there a better alternative?

Cheers Andy.

I've finally figured out how to use the search facility within this forum and managed to find out 'some' info. I've learnt that a unit from off the mk2 would probably be the best bet but would need some adjusting, mainly to mount it onto the manifold. Could anyone tell me what is needed to be done or where to get it done and how much it costs to get it done propperly.

thanks again, Andy.

bttt...... i've been advised that even a turbo upgrade to a mk2 could prove quite alot of work, just how much can i get out of the standard turbo unit & would adjusting the fuel pressure to compensate be enough?

You sound very lost. run the stock turbo at 1 bar boost and it will make around 130BHP. How much more power do you want?

You sound very lost
That's a bit of a harsh comment Steve ;)

Andy, basically I can't be bothered upgrading my turbo because of the work needed to increase the fuelling (probably risk losing my 46MPG) and the very likely chance of getting a badly-matched turbo that would upset the engine's torque and power curves (which I love just as they are).

If you do want to upgrade your turbo, you need the help of someone with a selection of housings and turbines (like SteveNZ had lying around in his garage...) and a good eye to judge what will work and what won't. I'm not sure why you jumped to the 20V turbo as a donor, since that's obviously a larger engine and still new enough to be expensive. I once bought the turbocharger off a small Japanese diesel engine which was cheap and about the right size, but it now lives at Steve's place since I didn't feel like taking the risk :)

As you can tell Andy, I don't really know what I'm talking about with turbos, but I think to get help from those who do, you're going to have to be more specific (and more general, at the same time) - more specific about what you want, more general about how you're planning to get it.

Cheers Alex, ah it was a relative who suggested the coupe thing so before i replied to him, 'yes ok' or 'no it's not worth it' i thought i'd ask the peeps on here. 1 bar boost does sound enough if it's bringing approx 30% more power to the car.
Yes i have been a little lost! I'm finding my feet now though i think!
Any recommendations as to any little mods that i should make sure are done to keep the car running ok? I've bought a fuel regulator and would like a gauge to match to make sure the air/fuel is running right as i've heard a rich mixture is bad for an engine long term.

an easy swap for an uno whould be a fiat 2.0 turbo with uno diesel water pump for the corect mount and the diesel gearbox this will all be bolt on with hardly any modifications

Sounds great! Got any pics? ;)

So is the diesel gearbox compatible with a twin-cam? (I assume you mean a 2.0L twin-cam turbo, 8V or 16V?)

I also assume you mean the larger 1.7 diesel engine? I think there were three diesels for the Uno: 1.3 non-turbo, 1.3 turbo, and the 1.7. It would make sense that the 1.7 would be gearbox-compatible with the twin-cam, since I expect it's been used in cars that only had the twin-cam engine fitted.

Cheers,

no i'm afraid i dont know of any one that has actualy done it i just know it can be done as he parts are all the same

but basicly the uno 1.7 diesel is the same block as the 2L 8 and 16 valve so it will go straight on the gear box also the 1.7 water pump for the engine mount

it's alot of work but i can all be done with fiat parts straight of the rack as it were
