Cooling Fan

Hi, sure this is a really stupid question but, just bought a bravo 01 reg 1.6 HLX and noticed that the temperature gauge needle goes upto the halfway mark quite quickly - in about a mile. Can also feel the fan kicking in quite a few times when stationery, also this morning after travelling about 5 miles at the other end the fan was running and kept running after the engine was switched off for about 5 seconds. The temp gauge doesnt move any higher than the normal halfway mark at any point. Lifted the bonet after about 3 hours to check the water coolent level which was above the max mark and the outside of the filler bottle was still quite hot too the touch. As is said might be a stupid question but the Brava I had before(W REG) didnt go uo in temperature so quickly nor did then fan cut in so many times, is this normal or a sign that somethings going wrong. Also when I turn the wipers off they stop at that point on the window screen and dont go to the park position, nor does the intermittant wipe setting work it works but not intermittantly, but constantly - new motor time or any ideas for quick fixes.
