Hi all,

help its drivin me mad 1.9 jtd sx 168000miles

Clutch changed last week £lots and lots

New problem,
drivin along no probs , engine stops completly and wont restart for about 30 mins,

Had a visit from AA man yesterday om m25( they all tossed coin and he lost)
Diagnosed loose battery terminal with biuld up around posts, they only had a small bit and some dust, but ameter showed only 11.8 volts in battery, he said it wont start at that level needs to be above, jump pack appield and hey pesto, away we go, went home cleaned thouroughly all connectoions checked every lead i could find., and behaved perfectly for another 200 miles,

another visit from a very nice man, ( lost the toss) exactley the same as before sudden stop, explained yesterday battery fine 12.9 volts, that was after trying for a good few times to restart it,

I WOULD ADD THE AA WERE THERE IN 45 mins and after he checked battery it started with no artificial resperatiuon

he recomended fuel filter change and poss intermitent electrical fualt on lift pump, ( reading through the forum I get the idea that this is mechanical , so thats ruled out,

have taken off fuel filter but no sins of anything in the mesh, waiting on a new one arriving but experience tells me this wont be the end

any suggestions please
thanx in advance

Hi rich,
noticed you are in Maidstone, only in Tonbridge,

Turns over fine, just wont fire at all, half an hour all fine go, till it stops,

Hi

I could come over and have a look if you like(I am a Diesel mechanic). Did the AA guy mention the fuel cut-off solenoid? Sounds like it could be faulty from your description.

Rich.

Hi thanks for the offer,
no AA man nomention solenoid,
will try filter should be here in 40 mins, and give it a try around the town, and give you an update, rightly so it sounds like something faulty,

who d you work for?

I work for Linde materials handling- working on gas, electric and diesel fork lifts. Did AA mention the solenoid? sorry it was unclear from your last post. Is there an electric pump in the tanks do you know? It sounds like it could be:

Air entering the diesel system
Blockage of some sort(Fitler as you say)
Fuel cut-off solenoid or wiring to it

Hi Rich,

dinner had, new filter on , ran on drive for 15 minites stopped when foot taken of accelerator,
will not start again,

have checked pump in tank and all working ( deisel all over engine now)
into filter out of filter and return pipes all flowing

beginning to think poss air in system, but that would cuase the problem staright away ????

so must be electrical ????

just going to try it again in 10 mins , will neeed ajump this time tho

report back soon

It may be entereing the system near the tank and take a while to get to the engine. How long does it last before it cuts out? Is it roughtly the same each time or different? If you want I could come over and have a look at some point if you dont have any luck.

Rich.

just jumped it ran for 5 minites then just cut out again, from 1500 rpm, no slow judder as if fuel related

I think its something electrical overheating,

crank/flywheel sensor a good possability as i had clutch changed last week

any offers rich ?

Lets not get confused-a diesel engine of this age wont have crank sensor(unless its for a rev counter etc)as the ECU doesn't need to know when the engine is at tdc. The fuel injection timing is controlled mechanically by the diesel pump(unless you have common rail injection). The only reason you have a crank sensor is to let the ECU know when the engine is a tdc in order for the ECU to create a spark to ignite the mixture. In a diesel engine ignition begins when the mixture gets compressed and heated so much it ignites itself-there is no spark! A daignostic test will be useless as it wont show up a wiring fault to the diesel pump. I am sure the fault lies with the pump or something related to it. If you want me to come over and take a look let me know.

Rich.

Diagnosis complete,

Hang on a minute...in life you have to wait for things sometimes, this also applies to garages who have had bookings for days...cant expect them to fit you in at the expense of someone who has already been booked.
Crank sensor is not a 'fast selling' item so rarely stocked,no garage can afford large stocks thesedays.
Just remember a fiat tech told you were the fault was (#9) so after saving loads of cash you can afford a donation to this wonderful forum;)
