I'm looking to get myself a hand held code reader for my Alfa 147 JTD, possibly the HGT, and any future cars. Can anyone offer any advise?

ODB2...Is this a generic protocol for Fiat/Alfa? or does the reader switch to the appropriate protocol?

Would a hand held device read and clear all codes ie: Engine, Airbag, Security,..etc? and be at a sensible price?

I'm getting, what I suspect to be spurious alarms being initiated on the Alfa, and don't want to spend a fortune on diagnostics.

Thanks in advance.

Any of the OBD2 handhelds should read and clear the engine management system. Even the cheap 20 quid sets.but best to go for one that has live data. They can be picked up for around 100 new. If you are looking for a tool that will do airbags.and security to alpha and future motors, then be prepared to spend a few grand for system plus software updates. Most airbag handhelds are manufacture specific.

Great info John...So does the "live data" machine read dynamic and historical events?

I think it would be the around £100 reader I would go for.

I feel as though I'm getting dragged into the 0110011..digital world kicking and screaming...good job I've still got the Spider which is part of the feely, touchy, listen analogue world.

You get just get a obd2 to usb cable, then down load fiat scan to read the car. Cost£5, but you need a laptop.

This is the one am using to read my cinq (IS Pre OBD2 but am using a different program to read the cinq )

Agreed. cables cheaper if you have a laptop or netbook to connect it to and will do live data and code clearing plenty free software for use on non Fiat group cars too if the need arises.

Thanks lads,

I knew this would raise more questions than answers..excuse my ignorance.

I only have a house p.c. and works laptop, but I think I have an old toughbook which may have a usb port, it certainly has serial ports though.

OBDII...Is this the program to be downloaded into the laptop, then FiatScan software loaded in to talk to Fiat/Alfa/Lancia vehicles? Or does loading in FiatScan do both jobs?

Also I think the Alfa may use CANBUS is this a further protocol? or is it just the name used for a system to transport data round the cars integral devices?

Yours confused!!

OBDII is the connection type you need. Also all cars after 2001 uses OBDII . So if you can read one car you can read all.

Fiat scan is the program you download and install onto your lap.

AS for CanBUS, no that doesn't change anything. The software should find most of the faults on the car.
