Hi guys,

driving along the other day and my clutch went floppy and i thought i was stuck in 4th gear, but there was pressure at the bottom of the clutch which aloud me to change gear with no grinding at all....a few secounds later after i pumped it the pressure came back and all was well and it has never happened since.

went home and checked the fluid and topped it up, it was just high enough to feed the pipe, but now its full.

Now i have a a whirring noise when i completely press the clutch down, it starts about midway just where i normally change gear, when the car is in gear there no noise and when idling there is no noise.

I have been told it might be the realease bearing wearing into the pressure plate (pie sections).

what do all think it is, could it be someting more sinister like the pilot bearing?

and what should it cost to get a new clutch? my qoutes so far are at there lowest £250 all in from Mr Clutch, i have been told not to trust them, and my little independant has qouted between 250 and 300 !!!!

for a dam clutch....is this right.

thanks for reading all of this

Gary

Have you checked your clutch slave cylinder, it sounds to me that its leaking and maybe not the clutch afterall. Plus its only a £40 repair aswell.

Its located on top of the gearbox under the battery tray. Small cylinder type thing with a rubber on one end. If the top of the gearbox looks wet then its leaking.

It could even be the Master Slave Cylinder which we can talk about later if it is that.

Also do not use Mr Clutch.

I will have a look when i get home, to help with this it has not lost any fluid since filling up.

But whats the noise? would the Slave cylinder cause that noise?

Thanks again.

slave cylinder operates the thrust bearing which operates the clutch. If it's leaking then it would not disconnect the drive fully so the gears would still be turning making a grinding noise when changing gears

Hi fella, thanks for that,

Can i assume that they will change the salve cylinder when they do a full clutch change? as i do have one booked now.

we did have a look underneath and there was a tiny bit of fluid but nothing obviuos, and so we assumed that the slave was not leaking.

This may jus be me getting paranoid but the car doesnt seem to be running as well, and the clutch has always shuddered a small bit from standing to first gear on low revs. Could it be linked. ??

cheers again - oh is £300 tha right price. ?

slave cylinder is not part of the clutch swap (unless they have told you they are swapping it)

Just because you have one booked, doesn't mean you have to go to it. Just call and cancel.

The slave cylinder as mentioned will not be replaced for a clutch change. This will need to be added on top of the clutch price.

£300 for a 1.6 is quite high i would imagine. Shop around. Or do the slave cylinder fix yourself, if it fixes your problem then you've saved yourself the £300. The 1.2 lot are changing there clutches for half that and i own a JTD and the price was £350 fitted.

I have just been out to check the car,

the fluid is still high there is no fluid residue around the slave cylinder none whatso ever i have supressed the weight of foot and more on the pedal and it holds strong there is no leakage in the system regards fluid, that is for sure.

The chattering or grinding noise does build up slowly from quiet as the pedal is surpressed starting from half way down to the floor, getting louder as it approaches the floor and the it is constant.

It is not really loud is not squeeling yet - but it can be heard by anyone withing 10 feet of the car.

I am worried that its the pilot bearing the bearing on the other side of flywheel which stops the clutch from pushing it into the crankshaft - apoligies if i am getting this wrong i am not a mechanic by any means.

I am trying to make sure that i tell the mechanic who will do it one the 17th of Oct the right stuff as i am skint and have to have a car for work and hate above all getting screwed.

Regards and thnaks again for all advice and lastly is £300 to much?

cheers gary

I was playing with the clutch and its noise tonight and when i push the clutch down to the floor (hold) and let the noise rattle away - i then pressed the acelerator pedal down slowly and with the increased revs the sound disapears.....? I was not driving when doing this.....

Does that give away any clues.

Gary

Dunno, but do not play £300 for a clutch. I paid £190 (£100 labour, £90 for the clutch).
