After a number of post on here before i have decided it might be a good idea to give the carb a nice clean but HOW THE HELL DO I DO THAT?

anyone any ideas heh???

Also, i checked the vacume thing and i cant blow into it.. didnt pop or allow air in.. dunno what that means [:0]

Thanks

Regardng carb cleaning: there are aerosol sprays which you can use with the air filter/airbox removed so you can see right into the carb.
Open the throttle (engine not running) and spray onto a non-fluffy rag - use the rag on the edge of the butterfly valve (exposed because you have the throttle open) and as much of the bore as you can reach.
Long cotton wool buds can help, but you don't want to drop anything down there [xx(]

When you think it's looking pretty good, start it up and give it a few sprays around the butterfly egdes.

You may need to reset your idle speed if there was a lot of carp in there:)

The vacuum advance - if you can't blow through it, congratulations: it's OK.

right well i did everything you said and well ive noticed a slight increase in acceleration speed.. but its still doesnt have much more power to get up slight slopes in 4th... by slight slopes i mean like just a tiny increase in a hill like on a motorway etc.

doesn make much sence but i know what im talking about :I

Also the carb was very clean inside anyway.. running a cloth ovewr the butterfly thing as u said didnt bring up any dirt atall.

Thanks for the help! much appreciated

Well, at least you know that's OK now...

It's difficult to guess really, but if the car hasn't been used much it'll sometimes improve with a good service, some cleaner in the fuel, and being used.

Reality is there could be any one of a dozen things robbing it of a few BHP.

well its just recently had a service and returned no more problems that the MOT didnt pick up (hand brake and some welding). Also i use it quite often and i recon the previous owner used it faily often aswell. as for cleaner in the fuel... what cleaner?> ive been recomended putting some cleaner in before but i went looking and didnt find anything that u could put in tyhe fuel that cleans things.

any names you could suggest or where to look or what exactly to look for?

thanks

Hmm..

A trip around Halfords, or most petrol stations I visit, will turn up things like REDEX.

If you find that, you should find others too. Others may have their own favourites.

If you want to keep on the right side of the neighbours while doing the old trick of pouring it neat into the throttle body while the engine is running [:0] ...
Do it far from home, or when nobody is about.
Don't forget to keep the revs up so it doesn't stallB)

Also add it to the fuel: measured ammount as per the istructions.

If that fails to get any improvement, you'll need to get serious and find out what's actually wrong..:D

If you have these things right:

Good compression on all 4 cylinders
good sparks at the correct time
correct ammount of fuel and air (mixture, and fully open throttle*)
correct valve timing
unobstructed exhaust

It aught to go as intended.

* many a car has been pulled to bits for lack of power, only to find the throttle doesn't fully open when the pedal is to the floor.

Thanks... ill check around the petrol station tomorra for something like that but i never noticed before. So do i just open the carb again and pour this stuff in whilst doing the little lever thing to make the revs go?

sounds easy enough... do i pour in the whole bottle?

thanks

oh and ill check that the throttle opens fully aswell!

Nooo! Not the whole bottle[xx(]

It's not really the correct thing to do with it, but I understand it can help shift carbon build up rather more quickly than when mixed with the fuel.

Just see how much smoke you produce, and see if you can hear distant sirens getting louder:p
