hi new here i bought my girlfriend a F reg fiat uno 45 a few weeks ago the car as been fine until yesterday when a strange clacking noise was coming from the engine. the strangest part is that the car runs fine on tick over but apply throttle and the noise starts. there is no smoke car runs starts fine. i was was wondering if one of you chaps could point me in the right direction.

many thanks (y)

Is it the over head valve 45 (903cc I think) or the 999cc FIRE engine 45?

MintySport is right, first thing to check is the valve clearances. If they are out (too big) then they will cause a clacking sound.

It might even be the exhaust manifold leaking, as that can also cause a 'clacking' sound depending on where it's leaking.

I'm not sure, but the ohv engine might have hydraulics tappets like the ohv Cinquecento engine. These are known to wear and cause tappet noise, especially if the engine oil doesn't get changed regularly.

Have you checked the oil level?

the engine has a metal top a bit rusty though i don't think its the fire engine. the noise seems to be louder than tappets it sounds like there is a nut bouncing about in the engine but only happens when the engine is rev'd

cheers

had the engine to bits and had mechanic round and fateful news is big end bearings so another uno to the scrapyard in the sky

cheers for help chaps
