Right guys, help please, searched for decades and cannot find any cheap gps or sat nav, i want nay need one please.:(

doesnt matter if its 1st hand, 2nd hand, left hand, right hand:rolleyes: . just need one. please. really want one.

someone heeeelp.:)

You can pick up PDA types quite cheap now, they usually come with a plastic sucker for your windscreen. Sports shops do pocket ones with exactly the came functionality as car ones. Screen is obviously smaller though.
Have you thought about a GPS card for a laptop?

Apart from that, no idea sorry.

hmmm, laptop....hmmm....poley that may be a very good idea. then I don't have to use it often, but would help a hell of a lot for my drive down to dover then through france to nice. that is a pretty damn good idea!!! :). i am very impressed.

battery if buggered in laptop so would have to get a car charger to permanently use or a power invertor/convertor 240v thingy.

but then yes granted it would work out cheaper, and would have a nice big 15" screen. however, laptops aren't meant to be vibrated i dont think. and so would have to have music down low. also isn't really feasable placing on my dash!!! haha. :)

i could just use it for the audio instructions at places i get lost, but then how do you link a laptop up to car stereo? any ideas? (this would also be ood for watching dvds with loud speakers ;)

You could link the audio out on the PC to the aux in on your head unit. Not sure how you could get the mute to work though.
Most laptops are fairly resilient and can handle vibrations quite well. Laptop drives have small lightweight components and so also have very little inertia.
I ran a Garmin handheld on my laptop using the OS route map software for a while.

ok then mate. cheers. i will try it.:)

so all i need to buy is a gps receiver (special one for laptop??!?) and the software. probably tomtom as that is the only one i have heard of. anyone know of any others? or has anyone got second hand ones.?? i dont really care if they are last years maps, will be pretty much similar.

Fortunately, GPS Mice which are ideal for laptops providing yu have USB, are easily available thru Ebay for £30-50

microsoft autoroute ay.. hmm... i will see if it looks any good. is it 3d??

i have seen photos of tomtom thing and that looks wicked but appears to only be for windows pocket and pdas not windows xp. how muhc it cost you too??

I must admit, that 3D map does look awesome! Makes the Ulysse overhead view look poor :)

I still reckon to go down the PDA route if possible, Clayton. Especially if you can then attach it to the windscreen by rubber suckers, with the GPS thingy also nearby. Personally, I don't like the idea of a laptop sitting next to me on the passenger seat.

I suppose it does depend on available funds.

arc thqat that would be nice wouldnt it ;) may need a bit of work though! i say go for it.

Stu, yeah i agree mate, really don't fancy the idea of having a laptop sitting next to me. I want to go down the pda route.
what do you think of this...

or there is this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4668&item=5715890309&rd=1

the latter is on ebay every single day and goes for about £350 each time. Do you reckon that is good deal? and is it definately everything i need to put it in me car.
(cept the link to the head unit but i know this and will do it later manually.)

cheers for the continuing help guys.

cheers for that. However, i have never heard of it and to go for the popular models i will probably go with the second ebayer link i gave above.
