Hi all.

I need to change my Glow Plugs on my 1998 R Reg Fiat Marea 1.9TD.
But I don't want to do it until I have a manual to look at first.
As Haynes don't cover the TD engine in their manual's, could some one point me in the right direction, even a simple detailed diagram would do.

Thanks.
Robert

Re: Untitled

There is nothing special about it.
Remove the plastic cover from the engine (if U have one)
Locate the glow plugs
Take the glow plugs connectors (power lines) off
Unscrew the glow plugs
Screw in the new ones - TIGHTEN THEM WHIT EXACTLY 15 Nm
Reposition the connectors
Putt the plastic engine cover back
And U are done

And put some Coppaslip on the new threads first!

Re: Untitled

Thanks. I'll give it a try when I get some spare time.

GLOW PLUG REMOVAL

Hi Sven I always appreciate reading your usully good advice, but how do you get into that tiny space to remove those plugs? Is there a special tool to remove the electrical lead nut? I stick a pair of pliers in there and just cant see to get hold of the nut! And thats only the 1st one on the left side looking at the engine from the front! I'm dreading trying to get it back on if I ever get it off! I have the correct tool to remove the glow plug once I get the first nut off. But how to get that off is the problem? I have a great Marea td100 which I love but the thing just won't start. I'm sure it's the plugs as it only started to be troublesome when we had -9c temps here in Scotland at the end of Nov.The coil light on the dash kept flashing for a while. Then that stopped doing it. It came back on intermittently flashing and the iffy staring began. Now even though the temp is above freezing it just puts out white smoke from the exhaust but will not fire up. Thanks for all your input Sven and everyone else who contributes. I always enjoy reading about problems I don't have.........Yet.
Dave.

First I dont have nuts on the glow plugs but caps/plugs, but I usualy change glow plugs with nuts using this tool.

Or this

by putting some paper in the socket like this

so the nut is in firm and cant fall out, or I use a pece of magnet and stick it in so it holds the nut in place.

Hope it helps.

Hi Sven, Thanks for the prompt response. It is very much appreciated. The pictures were very handy. I spent most of what daylight is available outside in trying to do that job yesterday. I managed to get one plug out by making a little tool to take off the nut. Then removed the plug with a std 12mm socket. That was the one in front of the injector pump.(that one tested out as faulty) I think I can get at the next one with a lot of difficulty. But the other two I just cannnot see how it is done. The third plug has a hose pipe covering it that goes to the camshaft cover, preventing access and the fourth plug has some equipment that as far as I see can't be removed without cutting the hoses and dismantling other components. I would appreciate hearing how you go about this. I am totally dismayed at Fiat's poor design of this car's engine accessabilty. 68,000 miles to have the plugs fail seems ridiculous to me. Great car when going, but I would think twice before buying another. If I manage to replace this second plug, do you think two good plugs alone will be enough to get it running?
Regards,
Dave.

Did you measure them with a multimeter ?
I cant help more, Im afraid because I have a JTD 1.9, but can help if you can send me a pic of the position of the glow plugs.
Mail me (click Sven under the photo on the left) catch me on msn, or post it if you can.

I can say only this, I had and did remove some of the parts to get to my glow plugs. Thay are realy hard to get to, but they also have an angle designed to get to them - you just must find it.

Hi Yes I measured the plug with an ohmmeter. That is from the screwed nut end to the coil sheath - It just read zero. I managed today to get no 2 plug out and that one the needle went right of the scale. So have I got that right? The first is dud the 2nd okay? Both were covered in black liquid sludge when removed. Indicating to me, I thought they were both not igniting the diesel?
Dave.

If the plug is working it should have 1 or more ohm showing on the multymeter. You measure them putting the + stick of the multymeter on the nut on the plug and the - stick on the earth (engine....) So if all othere have one or more ohm on them they should be OK and dont need changing.

Sven I'm not sure there is any difference in putting the ohmeter across the nut end and the glow coil sheath. It is still taking the same reading surely? Which is as far as I see on my ones are one dead and one OK. I can take a picture but I'm not sure what good that would do as you cannot, whichever angle you look from, see any part of the last two glow plugs. I and several friends have tried and failed! So what I will do is put two fresh plugs in where I can and hope that at least one of the two I can't get at are still okay!
Is there anybody else out there who has actually done this job on a TD100?
Dave.

You can check the Glow plugs when they are out of the Engine by fitting a piece of wire to one end put to the battery and then the Glow plug body to the battery Earth
The plug will Glow bright red at the end if it's ok
If not they will stay black

This will be very hot so mind the fingers

Trev

Yes I tried that thanks Trev. Both the plugs I managed to get out did not heat up, even the one that is showing a reading on the ohmeter. I suspect that one is dud too and showing a dead short to earth from the broken coil inside.
Dave.

For the cost involved you might as well replace all the glow plugs which should then ensure immediate trouble free starting.

Easy To say!!! Not so easy to do! Go back and have a look at the beggining of the thread of this discussion and follow it through.
Dave.

The instructions given seem pretty comprehensive. Just find a good motor spares place, go buy a set and fit them. What's stopping you? Changing them couldn't be easier.
You could even get now ones on ebay. Just don't pay too much.

Dave is having a bit of trouble here. So if you have done it. Share your knowledge with the forum!

Okay managed to get this motor running by changing those first two glow plugs. Delighted at that and glad I can put off tackling the other hidden pair. The tools Sven reccomended with the narrow socket extension would have been better than the thicker ones I used. Getting the plugs back in was difficult because the thickness prevented getting the right angle to engage the threads on the plugs, but I got there eventually. It was is -5 Centigrade here when I started it after putting them in so I'm optimistic that it shoulde be okay in the future on starting. I'll keep you posted! This is certainly a job I would make wrong doers serve as part of community service. What an absolute pain.
Another small problem has appeared or should I say noticed because I think it has been there for some time. There was diesel around the base of the right hand injector which I thought was spilled fuel after I took the lines off. But it appears to be a leak and you can see it frothing slightly round the injector base were it fits the cylinder head. The motor is running fine even with this. Has anyone had this problem? Would taking off the fuel lines and tightening it sort it? Or is a new injector needed? And sorry one more question. Does this need a special tool to remove the whole thing or just a std socket? Thanks again to all who offered advice.
Dave.

Dave, you talking about the metal pipe that goes on the injector or the injector it self ?
If you see any nuts that can be tightend tighten them. If there is a leek the engine is sucking air and wont work right.
