Hi there, new member Emma here with a query for those in the know...

6 months ago the catalyst on our 03 plate Ulysse was stolen and a whole new exhaust system was fitted through the insurance. Since then we've had nothing but problems with warnings about the particulate filter and the car going into limp mode. To cut a long story short the garage who did the work took the car in again and said the diesel additive was low and the catalyst needed to be regenerated. It's now with a main dealer who were meant to do the work at the start of this past week.
However, now we've been told that in order to do the work they need to put the car under a stress test which involves running it at 4000rpm for 10 minutes. The mechanic at the other garage agreed that he wouldn't be happy about doing that to his own car. Now does that sound like something that needs to be done for a catalyst regeneration? We've seen the emails from the original garage to the engineer at the insurance company and they've made it sound like a simple process. Apparently though the main dealer had to contact Italy to find out how to do it??!!

Can anyone talk me through what the real story could be and how exactly a catalyst regeneration is done so I can at least be informed :)

Thank you,

Emma

Just pay a specialist £295 (average cost) to remove the whole lot and reprogram the ecu, then your done with all the particulate nonsense!

why is the mec worried has the cam belt not be changed when it should have been?

No he means the high revving for that amount of time because old diesel cars don't like being revved hard for so long (e.g. on a motorway doing 70-80mph you will be doing around 2500-3000 rpm max.

A lot of older cars used to go BANG when doing these tests especially when the new MOTs regulations came out some years ago.

I agree with F/FRAN, have your car's software modified to remove the DPF and you will save yourself a lot of trouble and expense in the long run. There is no legal requirement for a 2003 model to be fitted with a DPF and many were delivered new from the factory as NO FAP (means no DPF) models. As well as changing the software, you will need to remove the DPF and replace it with a length of exhaust pipe. Alternatively, some people remove the DPF and drill large holes through its internal honeycomb to clear its exhaust blocking capability permanently, then re-fit it to the car.
