Hi all,

I have a 2001 Ulysse that will no longer start and I'm hoping to get some advice please.

EDIT: Forgot to add that this is the 16v 2.0 JTDs engine

Story is:
The car was running on low power, it then decided to stop a few times, all of which it restarted from. The final time the car was running extremely slow and then stopped and never restarted. Each time you try to start the car the engine turns over and fires anywhere from 2-5 times, however it will go no further. If you try to start the car and don't switch the ignition off before attempting to try again it just turns over and won't fire at all.

What I have done:
Had injectors re-built and tested, high pressure pump tested, high pressure pump replaced, low pressure pump and tank replaced and a new cam shaft sensor.

What I think it is:
I'm running out of ideas, however I think it might be the RPM sensor, however I'm not sure if this is the classic symptoms of it, the fact it fires a few times makes me wonder. Is there a way of testing these sensors, or has anyone got any ideas on what it could be, or what I can test please?

Thanks
Adam

Hi,
As I understand it you have the Hdi engine. The BRAIN of this car is the engine management computer. It senses what the engine is doing and then signals, for example the pressure regulating valve in the HP pump ,to deliver more or less fuel to the common rail, in response to the position of the the throttle position sensor(s) .....your right foot !!

When you turn your ignition key , you will get many lights on your dashboard. You MUST get the engine management light (MIL light )on. This tells you the computer...the ECU ...is energised. When the car starts, after a brief pause, the MIL light goes out....you hope !!

If the cam or crank sensors, or their circuits, do not tell the ECU what the engine is physically doing.....the engine will stop, the MIL light will come on, and with a CODE READER/DIAGNOSTIC TOOL, to communicate with the ECU and the fault code should !! point you in the right direction. You will get many codes....the primary one, and secondary, consequential codes due to the primary.

If as you drive along, an " allowable" fault occurs.....say pressure out of range...then the ECU recognises the fault, limits the RPM to say 3000 max, to minimise possible damage, and allows you to LIMP HOME. This is limp home mode. Again with a Diagnostic Tool , the fault code stored in the ECU memory, should point you in the right direction.

The work you have had done to your car.....it's a lot....and you have made no mention of what the ECU...the brain of the engine ....is saying.

Bring me up to date with where you are now and I may be able to advise. My Ulysse "stopped in wet weather" in Paris. It's in the UK after my fix proved temporary, and 3 ECU's later, and over 9 months, I am stripping out/down the harness from ECU to fuse box, because I have a short or faulty relay, drawing too much current through the Ecu and killing it.

I havent fixed mine, but am learning a lot.

Hello.
Had a similar issue with mine a couple of months ago. Does the pump mounted in the tank run for a second or so when the ignition is turned on?
Mine was down to the fuse box under the bonnet. Physically pull each fuse and check each connection. Found powdery residue on the fuse marked keyed ecu supply.
If pump primes when key is turned best of luck!!!
