Hi again seems buying a 1.6 cabrio (ELX) hasn't been the wisest of decisions I've ever made due to the problem with second hand parts ! I've just posted regarding alternative gearboxes for the car and due to the wide availability of other engines I was wondering if any other will fit easily into this car ?

Also got a good 82k engine complete with all ancillaries, injection etc if you want it - already out and ready to go - in fact take almost whatever you like (apart from bodywork items) off the hulk, which has got to go soon.

The Punto 1.6 is a genII 128 block so you could use any of the 128 range. Punto HGT if you fancy a few more broken horses. Diesel variant blocks go up to 1.9 but you can pick up a complete Stilo 1.6 (100hp) for less than an engine rebuild kit.

Whoof! If you start changing head, injection system or anything, major re-work. The most you could do AFAIK with a simple swop-it-in, is non-standard replacement (e.g. Stilo) block/bottom end only, keep existing head and all the wiring as standard. Would the Stilo pistons clear the standard head, valves etc? What would it do to compression ratio?

I don't think the eight valve head fits the sixteen valve block without either a custom gasket or adapter plate (ideal for lowering compression). Different water channels due to temperature variations between the engines.
1.9 td blocks have been used with 1.6 petrol heads.

I've been looking at combinations for my X1/9 ;)

You'd need a complete donor for a Stilo swap. Loom, ecu and auxiliaries.

Personally I'd find a cheap HGT or Bravo/Bravo HLX 1.8 the Stilo 1.6 is only ten or so more bhp than the Punto 90 engine.
