I have a 1998 ulysse 1.9td and last night i niped out to tesco to grab a few things. When leaving I went to pull off and heard a few clicking noices, followed by a load of smoke from the engine and back and the engine cut out. I immediately popped the engine open and discovered the fan belt was torn in half. Not snapped but in half width ways. Tried to start the car again and it did for a few seconds, followed by smoke again and then it died again. Eventually the battery went dead and RAC cover got me home with the car. After pumping the manual fuel feed the car ran for a while longer still with loads of smoke and a while longer cut off again. The RAC guy thinks it is something to do with the fan belt knocking the timing belt out, which in turn is not driving the fuel pump.
Does anyone have any ideas what would cause the smoke from the exhaust, and for the car to keep cutting out after a couple of seconds. (a while longer if fuel is pumped manually).
