Breather filters?

This is gunna sound really bad...

but what the hell are these breather filters?

you know the really tiny ones. mostly universal.
Where do they go?

are they of any use or just pointless? what do they claim to do?

sorry for the daft question... just wanted to know

No, they're not pointless - they are usualy used as an engine crankcase breather and sometimes as a breather for a gearbox/clutch housing.

Modders often use them to cap-off a stub on the cam cover that is left if they disconnect the oil vapours recirculation system.

I use one on my Daihatsu just for this purpose, as I'm not keen on the oily gunge going through the thottle body/inlet manifold, no matter how 'enviromentaly friendly' it's supposed to be.

I could do the same for the FIAT, but hav'nt had the time to bother to look at it yet.

cheers

so... do they actually do anything then? apart from just cap ends of things?

could you fit one to a bravo?

not saying im going to... just curious as to what they are

The stub should be be 'capped', (covered-over might be a better term) to stop any harmful dirt/debris from entering, but it must NOT be closed-off completely, otherwise any oil vapour/excess pressure that should be escaping the crankcase/transmission housing would not be able to do so, possibly causing a vacuum and even leading to expensive trouble.

Although a very simple device, it does both these things in one unit, that's why 'breather filter' is an apt description.

Incidently, a breather fitted to an engine cranckcase/cylinder head/cam cover used to let oil vapour escape does eventually get clogged-up with oil, (sometimes quite quickly if the engine is well worn) so it has to be replaced before it gets so choked that it can't 'breath' any more. The one on my Daihatsu camcover lasts about a year/13,000 miles before it gets too gooey and needs replacing.

Technicaly, the car isn't 'Type Approval' legal anymore, in that part of the emmision-control systems on the car has been by-passed/disabled
- oil vapour that 'should' be re-circulated through the inlet system is now being vented to the atmosphere, (Greenpeace would'nt like it, lol) - but it's no different to how all cars used to be not so many years ago. Like other similar mods, (de-cat pipes, over-size thottle bodies, e.t.c.) it's upto an individual's conceince.

You actually WANT a lower pressure in the crank case as it reduces oil consumption. Which is why they feed the breather into the inlet as this causes a low pressure in the crank case.

You will always get a certain amount of blowby and a sealed crankcase would quickly pressurise causing bad things to happen, such as the oil rings not sealing properly.
