hi all.

just had major work done on my beloved 1.6sx
had new clutch kit, new recon gearbox, and all belts and tensioners replaced.

£200 the lot including parts and labour ! bargain!

ive noticed a change though , it seems to rev higher and acceleration is much faster (not that im complaining)!

However i used to top end at about 123 but now top end around the 110 mark

any ideas on cause ?

cheers guys!

Re: Untitled

sounds like a different gearbox, but i'd be happy to trade my top 13mph for faster acceleration at road legal speeds tbh.
Also, past 100mph your speedo is highly inaccurate anyway.

i do sincerely hope, that u didnt rag it like that right after u had all that work done?

if u have stuff like that done, even if its just a new head gaskett, u need to drive it easy, let it all set in, then it will last longer.

as for the top end, my thoughts would be in the gearbox, ur old one would have been worn in meaning it can stretch further. anything u do will affect speed etc.

Shaun, boxes and gears dont stretch mate...

Its most likely that you have had a mk1 box fitted this time around (do you have a mk2 by any chance?)

the mk2 is geared more for economy with longer gears etc

yes i have a mk2, so do you think top end withh get better with time ? and of ourse 'i never drive that fast(cough, cough)'

is it true that after major work you should go easy for a while , i only floored it after doing about 100 miles.

cheers gaz

how can it get better.... it's a gear box.... they don't change.

if your pulling top revs in top gear.... then thats your lot!

I'd trade acceleration for top end every day of the week!!!

as Tommy said, it wont be changing unless you fancy stripping the box down and fitting the fith gear and final drive from a mk2 box... lot of hassle and not worth it imo!

like Tom, i would trade acceleration over top end day in day out.. and did on the 1.2. if i wanted a few extra mph top end then id have sourced bravo gearboxes, but with the shorter geared punto box on it it accelerated alot quicker! to have HGTs comment on how quick i can take off from a standstill to a ton leaving LFE services to get to trax says its gotta be good :)

oh ur 1.2 was amazing!!!

Even hud's standard 1.2 was such a giggle round Gaydon track!

Just take it carefull, keep within the speed limits & keep the 0-60 burns for the sprint track!

Drive safe - live longer!!
