only had the car a week, was running well, parked it up one night, next day wouldn't start.
Starter turns but battery becomes discharged quickly, have taken earth lead off and cleaned it up.
Fuel switch checked under seat all ok.
Key code indicator and warning lights go out ok.
Has anyone any suggestions please?
The car is automatic 1998 1600 16v
Many thanks Dave

could be the battery I think hence the quick disharge, some of the batteries that are going around just die, they dont give any warnings.(n)
the voltage need to be above 10 volts to start the engine

its that time of year when weak batteries die. plus if you've only had it a week it may have been standing for a while before you bought it and thats not good for batteries. i'd change the battery before you try anything else.

Thanks for the replies folks, unfortunately don't think it's the battery as I have tried different batteries that are fully charged.
Also have tried starter with no luck.
Any further advice gratefully accepted.
Thanks
Dave

have you tried checking all ur wires from ignition to coil????only takes a loose wire. or u may have a short somewhere along the line..do you know a auto electrician or test your self(y)

you changed the starter motor even though it was turning the engine ok? whoops

i'd check the alternator's output, it sounds like you're running batteries flat because the alternator isnt charging them. do you have a multimeter? you should expect 14.4v with no electrical on, and 14v with all electrics switched on (fan, lights, stereo, demister, etc)
