Re: x19 engine build

thanks and yeah your other post was great and if i didnt know better i bet money you founded fiat, but on that note i was really lost when you got into the calculations and other bits :( but ive got it marked and im sure im gonna need it at some point in my life,thanks....now about these cams you have are they race only? autocross?, street?..what profile are they would they suit my needs,or would they be overkill? and how much you wanna get for one. do you have aany thing else i could use yoou might want to part with? and lastly i dont have a credit card so would check? money order? cash? work

Re: x19 engine build

steve kinda off subject, but what is your take on coustom headers? you see i start class for TIG this month and at the end of the corse we have a project, kinda "do as you will" for a grade, and i was thinking of cutting the flange off an old stock down pipe and making my own(out of 2"-2 1/4" pipe) , i guess my question is i was talking to a guy and he said something about "the point of refraction<? reflection<?" and the location of this in relation to the pipe can determine wether it makes power up high or low does this make sense/sound right to you? and if hes right then how long should i make the down tubes and do i want a long distance or short distance before they merge together ? or is it not woth doing at all

The term is "rarefaction" ....this is when a pulse (intake or exhaust) exits to atmosphere, and is replaced by as pulse of the opposite sign (positive becomes negative and vica-versa)... this is Hemholtz therory, or commonly know as the stopped organ pipe principal.... all to do with sound wave theory.

Not really of any use to you unfortunately, as this is specific to the cam, valve sizes used etc...as soon as you make a change all you calculations are altered as well.... and if your having trouble with calculations for Static Compression Ratio (SCR) then this stuff will be above your head for sure.

With exhaust design another thing to consider is the "angle of bifurcation" which is the angle two pipe merge at when joining into one.

You really need to grasp the BASICS like SCR and its relative Dynamic Compression Ratio (DCR) (as these are fundamental to determining you camshaft selection) before you worry yourself with stuff like this.

Find and read anything by David Vizard or Smokey Yunick.. they deal mainly with small block chevs, but a four stroke is a four stroke and the tuning principals still apply, you need to grasp these before you attempt anything.

if you want a great book on the subject, but very complex reading, "the scientific design of intake and exhaust systems" by Smith and Morrison.

I have an eBay store, paypal is usually the best for international transactions.

I shall hide my face in embarassment (how could I forget it was PBS and not FAZA behind that book!)

Guy Croft does indeed have his own website filled with all sorts of trivia and latest stories of his engineering exploits. If you want to talk to the man just email him. He isn't always very responsive but he will reply and is usually more than happy to discuss such things. The address is on the front page of his website.

thanks for the links and info. but like i said the headers are just something as a project for my welding class, so its not too critical, but on the other hand the link for the exaust was really easy to grasp, and very helpful if i decide to go through w/it,if anything im only out the metal & time and if it works cool. but as for the cam selection, well it looks like im going to the pubic library this weekend, but at least now i'll be able to know what im looking for,and study up. by the way hows pay pal work? is it like a C.O.D,or credit card or somthing.i find stuff on e-bay i want ALL the time and it say i could use pay pal on it too. thanks guys

last time i looked, PBS made some wonderful exhaust manifolds for the X1/9. i would contact them to see what parts are available.:)

Paypal is really nothing more than a debit account ideally suited for handling online transactions. There are no card numbers to give out to suppliers so no danger of anyone stealing your money that way. You can pay money into the account from your own current account or debit/credit card or have paypal withdraw money automatically as needed. Money is paid out only when you explicitly authorise it.

It isn't 100% foolproof (no system is) but through ebay (who own paypal) you at least have some fraud protection.

ive used paypal a number of times with no troubles. but ive heard of some strange issues with them. the guaranteee they give turns out to be worthless. take heed when using it.(y)

so do you think i could get it set up through my bank or do i need to contact ebay?

Na you are right as usual steve. The scorp had larger rear pistons both in 1976 and 1977.

Close... it's actually the 132 and 125's that use the larger piston rear calipers, the piston size on these are 38mm, so yes it shifts the bias rearwards by a small amount... I have both my X19's set up like this as I also have larger front rotors/pads so it balances things out again.

I believe the Montecarlo/scopion also had the 38mm rear pistons, but I'm not sure if that's a S1 or S2, as we never had the Monte/scorp here in Australia.

I personally would think that putting front calipers on the rear for a street driven car would be quite foolish, bordering on stupid... no E brake and equal brake proportioning front to rear.... that's just not how it's done.

Usually when 48mm piston front calipers are fitted to the rear when circuit racing, some sort of bias regulator is installed in the rear brake circuit, or some sort of adjustment provided between the two master cylinders usually used... otherwise the rear will have too much braking force.

The other thing to consider is that you will be displacing considerably more fluid thru the master cylinder, resulting in an increase in pedal stroke.

You don't contact either - you just go to your local paypal site and register there. It really is that simple.

cool im gonna try that! bec there are alot of things on ebay and some others id really like to have, but w/o a C-card its tough. for instancee iwas just on a foreign ebbay site and they have a pair of cromodoras w/ tires aat no reserve. curent bid......1 EURO!! hell i'll give them 5! :) lol. thanks im gonna do that now.
