Technical Battery warning light

Hello,

Diving home tonight my battery warning light started flashing, only very occasionally at first then more often until it stayed on permanently.... then my heater stopped working then the radio, I thought it must be the alternator but every time the battery light flashed there was a clicking noise coming from the glove box, sounds like a relay.
so, before I replace my alternator could there be a different problem ?

Just an update,
I've had the van nearly 5 years and the battery was on the van when I bought it, so I decided to buy a new battery.

With the new battery I've got no warning light, however with the main lights on and when I put my foot on the brakes the clock lights dim, only ever so slightly though.

Just about to take it for a short spin and see what happens.

No more battery warning light but I did notice that the relay clicked a couple of times and at the same time the heater fan stopped, I'm not overly convinced that it was the battery but I'm hoping it was ....
