When I was changing my ABS pump I accidently shorted the casing out on what I can make out is the glow plug control unit with my spanner. There was a few sparks checked fuses and didn't think much more of it. Went to start the car and there was a small amount of smoke from the back of the engine. Have I buggered up my altinator...any ideas welcome.

Sorry to hear that fella, too late now but it ALWAYS pays to disconnect the battery when working under the bonnet of a car for just that reason.

Hope it's a cheap fix for you.

Is the alternator receiving current? If so, can you check the output from the alternator? It may be that the alternator is fine but the wiring isn't passing the output to the battery due to damage or hopefully a major fuse blow.
If the alternator is fritzed, they can normally be repaired. There was someone posting here who found an alternator repair shop in Great Yarmouth.

Either way it sounds as if the wiring needs a thorough check.
