As most of you probably know, my little Barchatta was involved in an accident and was written off my the insurance company. I was tired from putting a lot of work into the car, so thought I would plump for something different this time.

I've only owned Italian cars my whole life (146, Punto, Spider, Barchetta etc), so I have no real perspective on whether or not the stereo typical Italian traits were true (you know, the old lots of 'passion but frequently breaking down' stuff). So, I took my chances and bought something... German!

I got myself a 2000 Porsche Boxster with low miles and in great condition, and thought that you guys may be interested in a quick comparison. Let me just sat that, firstly, the Boxster has done less than half the mileage of my Barchetta, and retailed for almost three times as much. Not a really fair comparison, but here we go.

Where the Porsche is better:

Build quality. This thing is built like a tank. Fat, heavy, bulky. Really nice engine, if more than a little 'dry'. All mechanical components seem to be lasting the 10+ years very well indeed. And the fact that I can get 33MPG from a 2.7 flat six speaks volumes for its quality.

Power. I think it puts down about 250BHP. It’s got a lot of torque, and can happily be taken to 7200RPM. Don’t mistake this for speed though, it never feels that fast

Idiot appeal. Frankly, idiots love it. Not matter where I got there’s a guy in a baseball cap saying ‘nice car mate’ or ‘shoulda went for the Boxster S’… People think I won the lottery, rather than bought a car the same price as a one year old Clio.

Maintenance. I put Petrol in the Porsche. That’s it.

Where the Barchetta is better:

In just about every other way to be honest. The Porsche is massive, nearly six feet wide, and god knows how long. Way too bag for a two seater.

The B’s engine sounded better, by a long way. Gone is that wonderful tight whine, replaced with… well, nothing really. The Boxster is nearly silent in comparison.

Looks. Self explanatory I think, not sure anyone thinks the Boxster is an attractive car. Not even me.

Interior. You would be astonished by the similarities between the Boxsters interior and a budget, 10 year old Ford Focus. Cheap, black plastic everywhere. Not a patch of the B’s nicely styled, gorgeous console.

To Drive. The Barchetta was tight, and light, took some winding up. In the Barchetta, you felt like you could really shift. Took lots of concentration and had a real thrill about the drive. Things rattled and shook, engine and wind noise was spilling out everywhere. Lots of drama, and lots of fun :)
Also to try and answer this front wheel drive / rear wheel drive thing – you don’t wouldn’t know the difference unless you lose traction. And in which case, you’re probably better off in a front wheel drive ;-)

This is purely a personal thing, and utterly subjective but do I wish I had gone for another Barchetta? Well, yes - if I had the time to look after her. It was much more fun to drive, and such a fun hobby to have. The Porsche is a great car in a lot of respects, but I have zero attachment to it. Secondly, I miss this community here. It’s nice to have an unusual car and be able to share the experience with a group of enthusiasts.

Ideally, I would have a Barchetta as a second car, but I’ll never be able to afford or have space for one. Maybe soon I’ll be in the situation of not needing to rely 100% on my car every day – if that happens, I’ll be getting a Barchetta again

Tony

Interesting. I have had 2 B's and both were much more fun to drive than the 1993 SL500 I have now. And a damn sight more reliable, and cheaper to run (although that last bit wouldn't take a brain surgeon to work out).

I fell into the usual trap of big muscle = more fun. Totally not the case. A Barchetta you can drive well and have fun with, regardless of the reasonably modest power. Or perhaps even because of the modest power. These daft 250bhp hatches, 300bhp Imprezas and so on are just a waste of time.

And the Italian stuff is always more fun than the Germans!

Yup, I absolutely agree. 250bhp may sound like great fun, but the reality is that you need so much traction, so much weight and so much gear just to put it down, that the driver feels totally disconnected from the experience. I'm sure that many people will feel that total isolation from the car is a sign of quality, but I miss being able to feel every nut and bolt of the Barchetta. The reason I posted this was hopefully to help people appreciate their Barchetta a little more. Certainly, I know I took mine for granted.

Thanks Funky. you've really helped me to settle my mind. A very well written piece of comparison. All my life I've aspired to a Porsche of some kind but I've had my B for three years now and I'm still in love with it. I look at Boxsters and feel a bit of a pang, but I know I would miss the spirit of the B. You see so many Boxsters on the road and hardly ever see a B.
That said, you now have one of the best built and superb driving cars of all time even if it is a little more clinical in its execution.
Hope yoy really enjoy it!(y)

Thanks Spiderboy! I do like it, and I doubt anyone would ever have a legitimate complaint with a Porsche. However, since buying it, not once have I felt like just taking it out a drive just for fun. I used to do this at least once a week with the Barchetta, it's just such a damn nice car to drive.

And yes, where I work there is at least three Boxsters sitting in the car park. Far from slating the Porsche (it's a really great car), but it really shows you what a bargain the Barchetta is.

Hi Funks, Sorry to hear abouut what happened to your old Bee. The New Boxter looks the dogs b****ks! (y)

I guess if you want to compare the cars on paper then the proshe would win in all catagories....

Performance (p)
build quality (p)
handeling (p)
Looks (p) (in my opinion)

But saying this.... I currently own 3 cars.

1. My Barchetta (owned for the past 4 years since I arrived back in Bahrain) love her to bits... smile factor 10 / 10 in 13 years here never seen another 1 on the road!!!

2. Ford Focus ... need something reliable that I can use to go to work in and not have to worry about ordering parts a week or 2 in advance....

3. Lotus Elan M100 (recently found my old car back up for sale so just had to buy her back...) :bang: Same price but much quicker than the Bee but older and parts difficult to find....

I have recently looked at selling some of them and upgrading to a newer car. Looked at Porshe boxter, cayman and 911... also BMW Z3 & Z4

Yep, reliabale german engineering (as can be seen all over the island) Just didn't like the image that they gave..... (ie mid life crisis / chav)!!

Also looked at the newly arrived Lotus Elise / evora ....

elise... well not a daily use car!!! try to get in and out and you will know what I mean!! fantastic performance..... (will leave a boxter wondering where it went)!

Evora...... err, nice car but not a soft top... only available new here and for a serious price tag!!

When I first bought the Bee..... my first reaction was: Eek! I just bought a Fiat!!

Since then, I have gotten to love her quirks! and now adore the car..... don't ask why.... I do not know!! I've been promising my girl that I would sell it as I have run out of parking space but just cant bring myself to do it... I now alternate which car I leave in the work car park.... !!

I have driven the Boxter and the Z3, Z4... yep! they are faster... looks and build quality better than the B.... but for some fec*ed up reason its not like driving the B !!! ( guess I need to stop smoking weed)...... Hang on a min... (I do not smoke it..... maybe thats the problem)!!!

I know 1 person that sold his Elan for a Boxter.... after a few months the engine siezed which in the boxter was cause for a full engine replacement......

Other than this I can't supply you with any legitamate reason why to drive the Bee instead of the Boxter.....

It's just everyone to their own........

For some screwed up reason.... I'll be happy with the Bee !!(y)

I think, to be honest, charm is what most cars lack. And that's something the Barchetta has in abundance.

BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, are all good machines but they are just that - machines.

I completely agree. German cars do well on engineering but always leave you cold. Loving a car is about how it makes you feel - not the facts and figures.

I wonder whether that we love our barchetta's because of their faults and idiosyncrasies, not despite them!

Personally, I've always wondered what a 911 would be like (must be well sorted!), but the Boxster is a very lazy and unappealing design for me. Wouldn't buy one if it was someone else's money! Each to their own of course ;-)

I'll stick to Italian cars thanks. Bags of soul, passion, beautiful styling, that exhaust note and that.... je ne sais quoi.

I`ve never had (or even driven) a B, but I have had (& still got) loads of Fiats.

I`ve also had a fair few Porsches & Jags.

As per my sig, I`ve got a Boxster, had it several years now. When I got it (after a 944 cabrio) I was disapointed, it was too quiet, too bland, too flimsy & just felt like a Golf.

I then modified it to address some of the issues, fitting a full Porsche sports pack suspension & quick shift kit, 18" alloys, I de-catted it & fitted a Janspeed exhaust, a K&N induction kit that was replaced by a K&N panel filter as it blew 3 AFM`s (£600 a pop!) & chipped it.

Also did some dress up parts inside to give it a bit more `bling` (but not too much!).

It transformed it. It now feels, drives & sounds like it should have done to start with & still delivers 35mpg...

Only faults so far have been the AFMs, which were my fault, & a water pump.

As some of you have pointed out though, power has nothing to do with fun, I stll enjoy myself more in my 57bhp Uno than I do in either the Porsche or my XJR. :)

Its not what anyone would cal pretty, & it doesnt have the presence of my old 944, but its not ugly either.

Changing the orange lights & wheels help alot too.
