Hi All,

I purchased a 02 fiat stilo 1.6 16v around 18 months ago for 1700 quid.
Since then I've been told that last owner was a right twonk and rev'd the nuts off it.
I've had a computer hooked up to it and it showed max revs had been 7200!!!!

I've replaced the front brake discs, pads, four new injectors, four new coils, repaired the fuse box, replaced the battery and the alternator belt.

Now... It appears to be using water and has water in the oil.
It needs a new exhaust system and two new tyres.

This could mean 350+ for headgasket, 257 ( kwik fit quote ) for exhaust middle and back box and 85 quid each for tyres!

I could probably do the head gasket/cambelt/water pump and the exhaust myself. ( I've rebuilt engines, so I'm quite capable ).
But... can I be bothered?

Is it time to dump it down the scrappy and buy another car?

It has around 82,000 miles on it and its the worst car I've ever owned.
Worse even than a 20 year old fiat uno I had, cost me 150 quid, lasted four years and only died when someone set fire to it.

new hg, are you sure, the 1.6 has a habit of getting a little bit of water in the system during the winter months. mine used to regually show the white scummy oil in the winter months but this cleared up as soon as the weather cleared. i would only get this in the oil filler cap as well, if you getting it here but your dipstick is fine then i would say its normal. are you loosing water?, if your losing water check your rad as they have a habit of failing at this age (about £60 from euro car parts)
new exhaust system for the 1.6 5dr last time i bought was less than £120 for the complete system (it sounds like you have a quote for oem, get pattern there really is no difference on those sorts of items). tyres are about £50 each for budgets on the alloys, low profile ones are about £60 for budget (i know this as ive bought for both).
exhaust and tires are wear and tear items, hg is also to a certian degree, i would say do the hg yourself if you have the now how and tools if it is infact dead. this way you will save yourself a bomb.
With all the work you have done so far its not a good idea to throw that away on such normal wear and tear items.

Dont bother with kwik fit, they are over priced - go to a tire / exhaust specialist centre to get better deals, if your having an number of tires and exhaust theywill always do a deal with you.
ps ive had and seen many horror storys with kwikfit, i personally wouldnt every touch them again after a stunt they pulled with a good friend of mine.
also i didnt know revs level was recorded??!?!?!?

repair it,I am going to repair mine slave ,clutch and master cylinder around £400 in all,I had same problem with white scum in the oil cap but the car had been standing a while but after driving for a while the scum went.

QUOTE: also i didnt know revs level was recorded??!?!?!?

For those that wish to know:
The maximum revs reached since new is recorded. I have yet to find a way to reset this.
This was obtained with a Snapon Solus.

After a cup of coffee and a relaxing afternoon, I've decided that I will fix the exhaust and tyres.

As for the head gasket.. well... I'll buy one of those coolent-leaky-head-gasket-colour-changing-things and test it first.
If all is bad, I'll buy cambelt, head gasket , water pump and do it myself.
Just have to use the motorbike for a while.

Oh btw... are the head bolts stretch bolts? and are there any other bits that would be prudent to change whilst I've got the car in bits.
