Does anyone know if the ASR function can be disabled completely? I pushed the button to turn it off today while thrashing the beast around a track day and noticed that when you really really push the car, it seems to come back on.

When you turn the ASR off, all you lose is the wheelspin/traction control. The stability system is always on, however at a less intrusive setting with the button pressed. Impossible to get too out of shape im afraid!

Er, sorry, ESP or ASR or whatever the 'interfere with my driving' function is called in Fiat-speak. That thing. It doesn't seem to go away when you turn it off. Most annoying. I wonder if there is a fuse I can pull?

its the stability control that stays on, and no you cant, some other manufacturers have a sequence of buttons to go through to disable it, not sure if fiat do, i had the esp kicking in on the ring last year, but not as intrusive as it would be with all the aids on that come with the asr turned on.

one instructer told me that, if you drive propperly and not over aggressive i.e, controlled, then the "anti-crash" aids, shouldnt come on, and i did notice a big differece in interferance when the asr was on(y)

ASR is traction control and it can be turned off. The 500 will happily spin its wheels in the wet as I found on my testdrive when pulling away from a junction in the wet with the ASR turned off.

ESC is stability control and can't be turned off.

I would be a little scared to be driving on the same roads as someone who intentionally drives hard enough to engage the ESC  If you're talking about on the track then I do apologise :)

i have learned to love the ESP on track - it does allow you to hang the back out a little bit if you are smooth and progressive, especially in the rain

remember you have those sticky tyres so when you do reach the limit it will have to react quite aggresively

thats what an instructer told me, if your progressive in a controlled manner i.e controlled agression, then the esp shouldnt kick in, it will only kick in, in the wet or if your being well over agressive, which isnt the fastest way round a track, you need to be smooth(y)

absolutely
the ESP can be very aggressive if it thinks you are going to spin

first time on track at Haynes test track i deliberately provoked it by trying a scandanavian flick followed by a yank of the handbrake while i had throttle nailed to the floor:devil:

car was having none of it and braked the car to a quick stop in a straight line and killed the throttle - really took me by suprise!

my stilo did that, at the end of the day its designed to stop you crashing and it does a great job, dont drive like a prat and the car wont treat you like one:D

fiats have feelings too(y)

lol

i half expected the blue and me lady to start talking and tell me off and a :nono: icon to appear on the dash

like i said - not a hooligan, was exploring the limits on a safe controlled environment (don't try this in maccy d's car park kids...)

never said you was, "prat" was a generalisation of driving, not you personally(y)

I look forward to my Cinq build being complete so I can drive as I please without the car interfering.

I know smoothness is the best way around and all that driver theory. But I grew up with big dumb v6 and v8 rear wheels drive cars. Part of my DNA requires me to be an absolute hooligan in a car from time to time. And I don't want the car getting in the way :)

Have you ever tried driving around in a FWD car in a McDonalds car park with two trays under your rear wheels? I've not done it myself but apparently it's a load of fun :p I wonder what ASR would do in that situation? :p
