ok lads i need a hand here.

one of my lady friends... wait thats wrong... my only lady friend (hahah) has problems with her pc. she sent her pc off to some repair shop as she kept getting viruses and pop up jobbies. he cleaned it and sent it back tellin her its her aol...

to me this sounds like ****. cos even if aol was bad. the firewall (which she dont have yet) would stop it and the anti virus would pick up any other problem.

or am i looking at it wrong and maybe tell her to move over to bt?

all help needed as i am ment to go fix it soon and its about the only thing i dont know about lol

You get mixed reactions from people using AOL.

Everyone in the computing-world knows that AOL means Aresholes Online, and that they provide a ****-poor interface that customises pretty much everything to do with your pc. Annoying is an understatemet, so us computer geeks steer clear.

On the otherhand, I have heard that AOL can offer a decent service, but if you like to tinker, AOL is not the way to go.

As regards to spyware, you'd be suprised at how the Windows Firewall is good at stopping the stuff. Accompanied along with SP2 and Microshite® Spy-ware BETA software you can't go wrong.

I'd say ditch AOL and get a PROPER ISP.

i have told her but she not that keen.... i think the guys talking ****. if i through aol back on then add a firewall adware and pop up blocker aswell as mcfae 2005 she should be safe she only wants it for internet browsing and music downloading

If she's happy with AOL i'd leave it be... I tried removing AOL once in the past and boy did I regret it - ended up re-formatting :(

But, yep as you said load it up with Firewall, Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus.

If you want to avoid Microshaft then use Zone Alarm, Spybot or Adaware, and GRISOFT.COM for free versions of all the above.

im on aol and i can honestly say i havent ever had any downtime nor any problems with them (tho i dont use the aol program)

i just use aol login name and password.

i use standard windows dialer and a router.

have a read in here it will tell you how to connect to aol without using there crap program.

also get zonealarm (free) or the pro edition firewall. ive been using it for donkeys :)

speed

I agree with speed, I also don't use the program because I have a network but I get good speeds and have had no real downtime. Plus they have just doubled the speeds for the same price and it is still unlimited unlike a lot of others. Some even say unlimited but then cap it at 30gb, what a rip.
I only pay £19.99 for 1mb.

Smee,

Check if she has the windows messenger service enabled. This is on by default and spamers use it to send messages to peoples PCs. These messages are harmless but annoying and can be mistaken for viruses etc and a firewall etc doesn't stop them.

Check out http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/
