Anyone had a tyre fail like this?

This is an Avon ZV1 195/55-15 on my Marea that looks like it's expired. On the inside, the tread blocks are one up, one down all the way around, not just ramped like you can get with bad tracking etc. Makes it sound like there's a dead wheel bearing.

Not seen anything like this before, gonna get it changed tomorrow methinks.

Works for me
Is the tyre out of shape
It may be the steel cords etc breaking up

Yeah, it's wierd. The contact face is still flat and the tyre is still round, I guess it must be falling apart inside. Odd how it's every other block though.

Might see if I can blag something back from Avon, wouldn't have expected one of theirs to fail.

Got a new tyre fitted today, asked the blokes in the tyre place to have a look at it for me. At first they said it was probably shocker failure, but they became less certain with a closer look. Couldn't really explain how it had gone, so they've sent it back to Avon for me to see if they can come up with something.

I suspect I won't get anything back, not too fussed if I dont, but would be interesting to know why it's happened.

Will let you know if I get a reply.

Just to update - got a letter from Avon today and they're crediting me with 40% of the value of a new tyre. Not bad considering it was half worn, manufactured in 2001 and fitted to the car when I bought it.

Was worth asking, in the end!

fair play to them, but they still should have refunded you the full amount cos you did them a favour giving them their defect tyre back!

better than nothing though mate - nice one!
