You're not going to be able to move the engine to the side to slip it off the input shaft, the box will either need to be removed first to enable the engine to come out the top, or disconnect everything, drive shafts, gear linkage etc and drop the box and engine complete and lift the car to get it out from underneath.
Ok everyone here is the drill! I have a HGT but the engine is screwed, i pick the new engine up next weekend so this weekend i am trying to get the engine out!
@Daz... its a straight HGT swap!
@Light warrior.. yeah its fecked!!
@Dean.. no you havent spoken out of place!
@ Graham... Please can you help me with this, my plan at the moment was to strip out the rack etc and drop it out the bottom and lift the car up! what would be easier??? its pretty tight in that engine bay i think this is going to be pretty hard! So you think if i disconect the gearbox i can just hoist it out the top? that would be easier for me!
I aint going there mate! i wont have the HGT on the road for a few months or so, as i am skint what with buying another car with out selling the 1st and sorting out this alarm etc could cost me a bit but i am fighting for the warrenty thingy...and if i do end up paying at least i know its been sorted out properly instead of the RAC man bodging it!
If it was me I would jack the nearside up and remove the gearbox (linkage and drive shafts) from under the vehicle which is easy and standard procedure. Then I would lift the engine through the top with an engine hoist. Dont strip the rack out, theres no need! bit of advice, the more room you make yourself the easier it will be! ie remove rad to prevent damaging it, battery tray etc! if you're unsure take digi photos!
@Daz,, yeah i got a good deal on a hgt which needs some work! not as good as what graham got with his coupe!
Cool... so basically take the gearbox out first leaving the engine in position... once the gearbox is out i will be able to lift the engine out over the top!
I was planning on taking rads out etc just so you say, it avoids causing any damage! camera is going to be my most important tool i think! The car will be having a respray once the engine is out so i will srip it out as much as possible, but you can not see much paintwork anyway once the engine is in!
Ideally i need to have the engine bay striped but have the car rolling so i can get it to the bodyshop i work at... hence i didnt want to take the engine out the bottom as the rack would have to be removed and then put back in to the bodyshop and then back out again etc etc etc....
So any tips on this then? things i should look out for in particular?
