Hi Everyone, i have posted this on the newbie board as well, not sure of my way round the site yet sorry:confused:

I have just bought my wife a 52plate 1.6 active stilo, the bloke said all was well with the car. just as i was to drive off he siad there was a battery fault which he fixed, but he bough a alternator just incase and i could take it with me. sure enough, 5 miles down the road the warning system said alternator fault!!!!!!!!!!!!

the next morning when i started it up the power stearing wont work???? is it connected to the alternator problem?

I have tried to swap the alternator but cannot get to the bottom bolt, it is impossible!! this is my firs fiat experience I only paid £1400 for it and it suggests 33k miles with stamps in the book, but until i get this lot sorted im not sure if its a good deal or not

can anyone help please?

cheers, fuzzie

Re: please help new owner

See your duplicate post.

it hasnt come to that yet!!

i did check out the procedure online, useless. it said loosen belt, undo nuts and wire, replace and tighten belt.
yes thats fine, but

1 how do you loosen the belt thing?
2 you can only get to one nut
3 - not got to three yet coz i havent passed 1 or 2

Alternator swap, how?

STILO 1.6 52PLATE, STILL CANNOT SWAP THE ALTERNAOR, HOW DO YOU GET TO THE BOTTOM BOLT????????????????????:bang:

Do you remove the full bracket from the enginecheers fuzz:worship:

Re: Alternator swap, how?

Had somebody out today, said the alternator is working fine but thres no power on the main lead to it from the wiring boom? whatever that means. he said he doesnt have the equipment to fix it charged me £30!
He advised i took it to a main dealer to do a diagnostic check, they saID IT £51 and t will only confirm that there no power on the lead, the mechanic will then have to find it at £47 +VAT per hour, so if it takes 3 hours and a diagnostic check just to find the fault it will have cost a fortune. he said if the motor has gone on the power stearing thats another £900, and i thought i had a bargain

the top is off the battery and fuse cover, therefore i think somebody has been trying to find this fault before they sold it, cheeky gits

Where do i go from here, is there a fuse on the power stearing? do i get a good auto electrician? any good uns in st helens merseyside?

please somebody make a suggestion

fuzzie:(

Re: Alternator swap, how?

First thing you need is a code reader and then go from there.

Alternators hardly ever fail on Stilos and the power steering failure is nearly always linked to supposed alternator failure (it's still safe to assume insufficient power is being supplied to power steering though - which at least is a clue).

Fair chance you just have an bad earth somewhere but for a car without history it could be almost anything.

There's masses of info on the Forum - so start reading - and get that code reader.

thanks argonaught, whats a code reader?

Re: Alternator swap, how?

Oh i see what you mean, there loads on ebay from about £20. do i just buy one and plug it in? any card reader or a speacial one. would anyone know which cheap card reader for my 1.6 petrol stilo 52plate?
i may risk it and jsut go for it

Re: Alternator swap, how?

thats good, thats the same one i was looking at on ebay. think ill buy it now.

update on the car, ive just come to the inlaws to pick it up(about 8mile away) 1 mile down the road everything started to fail, air bags, bulbs etc, then the engine conked out, no power at all! typical. therfore it proves that the alternator is not powering the battery, the bloke who looked at it said that the alternator was fine, what can go wrong between the alternator and the battery?
ps, both connections were loose on the battery, whaich we fixed and theres no cover, exposing all the fuses etc, i think they have been playing around with it

Fault code U1702

Hi Guys, hope you are all well,

I'm getting closer to finding the fault on my stilo, I've recharged the battery and managed to get it home from my inlaws before it got dark. Ive purchsed a code reader as advised and managed to work it!! i surprised myself. Ive got 1 fault code, U1702 but its not in the book, could anyone help me please?(y)

Thanks, Fuzzie

Oh, i should add, the faults are:

the battery isnt charging
the power stearing isnt working
the battery ligth on the dash comes on
after a while a message saying the alternator is faulty comes up

Ive had the alternator checked and they said its fine?

Thanks Davran, I had a look earlier but it was getting dark, i found the other connectors and opened them up and sprayed them with WD40. Ive since read that it shouldnt be used! I couldnt see the D40 connector funnilyenough??it must be there somewhere? also, there is no battery cover which could have led to the problem although it all seemed dry?

Im a bit worried that the battery is loosing power, does this code refer to that? could the faults be connected? is a simple bad earth?

does anyone have a link to the fault codes?

U1702 does not relate to the charging system but the alternator excitation wire (D+) also goes through the D4 connector. ("All roads lead to Rome" or the D4 connector).

If the D+ wire is not connecting with the alternator, you may be able to excite the alternator, to start it charging, by revving the engine to about 4000 rpm whilst the car is stationary.

ok, using a table lamp i have disconnected the wire under the fuse board, there are only 7 relays is this right? it doesnt seem to have the far right relay? i have found what i think is the D4 connector, it has a purple slidy clamp? i used an air dryer to dry everything out, it all looked clean and dry, turn back on, same fault, aaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhh

there was another clamp with yellow pins that wasnt connected to anything?

just tried revving it, 10 minutes at high revs and no luck

car still faulty, whats my next step, anyone?

ive given up, a freind looked and said it was the alternator as the battery wasnt getting the right volts across, ive took it to a garage, ill let you know

You're still creating multiple threads about the same problem (do you really think that makes it easer for people to help you ) - now merged yet again

There's some really useful advice here but you seem keen to ignore it
