Morning, last night when I flicked on my high beam I got a "Alternator Faulty" message from my friendly on board computer, he then advised me to contact the garage.

I had the fan on full blast (11 !) and the CD loud (Town Called Malice) when I dipped the lights the message went.

Any ideas peeps?

Is it The Jam that's the problem or an electrical issue?

Tar,

King Prawn Ring.

I get that message whenever I stall mine :p.
If the electrical circuit is loaded up and you get it, you may have dirty/corroded connection(s) on the battery, a poor contact on an earth strap/lead, or you may have a dying battery.
It could also of course be the Alternator on the way out :D
If you have a multimeter (or access to one), switch it to DC Voltage and put the probes onto the battery connectors (not on the battery terminals themselves, yet),
With the engine idling, you should be getting around 14-15V.
Much lower (<13V), and your alternator needs checking.
Next, put the probes directly onto the terminals of the battery.
You should get the same voltage reading, if it drops off much, then you have a poor connection on one (or both) terminal clamp(s).

According to the Workshop CD manual the voltage from the alternator should be 14 volts, see picture 1:
