hi there just joined the forum to seek some advice about my fiat stilo 1.6 got a crazy situation drivin the car one day and out of nowhere car conks out and dashboard says (alternator failure loose connection) switched it off and on again struggled to start. manage to get it started and parked up, since then car keeps cutting out while driving an when parked.
took to garage done a diagnosis check nothing came up checked all wires all fine had a tamper with earth wire mechanic gave it back still same thing
a electrician checked it and said the spark power not sparking an thinks could be crank shaft since he checked it car will not tick over just engine judder.
made aa look at it said the same as electrician .
i changed the crank shaft and car still not starting this my 3rd stilo an im losing hope now im thining is it a ecu problem came up on diagnosis on 2nd check but not on 3rd check does any body have a idea thank you so much for any advice

Sorry, i cannot offer much advice but wanted to say i got the same problem with my .1.6 2003 dyamnic. Its been over 2months now, car has been checked over (well i hope so) had 3 diagnostics tests at 3differents highly recommended garages but no faults showing!!

Luckily for me the car is still driving but guaranteed to cut out every day within a 2mile drive back and forth to work sometimes very erratic. I too have loose connection displayed followed by alternator failure but also have had abs failure - security failure - and high temp where the dials on the cluster reset themselves. My next step is replace the crankshaft sensor as thats what all garages recommended.cheapest option

Im browsing the forum and the net on a daily basis trying to find a solution but keep finding mostly people start threads but never state if they ever solved the problem.frustrating!!
but there are ones that do, based on my findings so far some people have had it sorted just simply by changing the battery some alternator too..crankshaft is also one of the main culprits. Some have sorted theirs by repairing/replacing their ECU (my second step would be to get it tested) some even stated by changing the engine fuse box solved there problem others have found corrosion somewhere leading to the rear lights .some suggested it could be a fuel/air relay issue i made a note to myself to get the inlet valves and the throttle checked out also the coil pack unfortunately some decided to flog it.

As you can see nothing very conclusive- Im not that technical or handy when it comes to cars but have a search through the forum for yourself and dont go off anything i stated.

Hope you get it sorted ..keep us posted(y)

I know how you feel

Hi All

I have the same problem as well with 1.6 Stilo cutting out with loose connection error. It happens every day now.

Local garage couldn't find anything wrong and his computers could not find a fault.

I need to know if Fiat ecuscan can help or if Fiat dealers software will identify likely cause.

Thanks

nice one moschino02 this problem doing my head in im in process of getting ecu checked if this dont work might try the battery or alternator even though garage man says there fine i do appreciate the advice.

Check the alternator output with a meter. Should be a constant 13 to 14.5ish volts whatever the revs. However this will not be connected to a starting problem as that power comes from the battery. A lot of people think that because the battery is showing a healthy voltage it is ok but if it can't store the charge it won't stay good for long.

Think i might have to get intouch with fiat, only to see what they have to say even though i cannot trust dealers

Hi,
I know this thread has been silent for over a year now but i found a solution to this problem.
First of all... Don't panic. It's not as bad as everyone says.
It's a simple design flaw by Fiat which allows the ECU the get too hot. I solved it by sticking some insulating foil between the engine and ECU.
I also checked the BCM and Alternator. Both work fine.

If you try this and the problem still persists replace the BCM and/or alternator.
That should fix it.

Hope this is any help for you and/or future googlers.

Most problems with this is that the Engine Management unit is faulty it gets too hot. I had this problem Fiat could not sort purchased new ecu and 12 months on had no more problems I would recommend removing ecu from engine and relocate it to battery box. There is plenty information on this forum about the Stilo 1.6 Ecu.
