I have a '97 model Uno 45 mark 2. off late there has been a lot of vibration from the exhaust unit, this got me to get down and take a look below. there is a lot of rusting on the exhaust pipe, end can and there is also a slight dent in the pipe.

the already racy exhaust note of the uno 45 has only gotten better with the rust and the holes in the pipe. but now i wanted to get a completely new exhaust unit all the way from the exhaust manifold.

1. i wanted to know whether it would be wise to fix a header? if yes which header unit must i consider fitting?

i believe that tunning one aspect of the car will not really benefit and am considering also fitting a Cold Air Intake(CAI). probably use a performance K&N or something.

2. i need some advice on which CAI unit i need to use as well?

My car currently uses a Webber 32 TLF carb

3. i wanted to know whether there is a better carb i could buy to get a little more performance out of this car.

4. has anyone tried installing high lift cams on this 999cc engine? which make should i look for?

while making these changes i wanted to get some alloys fitted, unfortunately i donot have power steering in my car and fitting a bigger tyre will make it hard to use in low speeds. Also i notice that the Uno has a 98PCD. this is an alloy spec not available in india.

5. would anyone recommend a famous make of 98PCD alloys which i can import and also what tyre size must i use considering there is no power steering.

i am currently running 155/80/R13.

or apart from all this work, is there any other mod which you guys would recommend that i carry out on my car. i am attachin a pic of my car below.

Hello Sharan,

You've clearly done your research there, you raise lots of good points. You are exactly right that 'tuning' one aspect of the car won't get you much, and you have named all the parts you'd need - carburettor, camshaft, exhaust, and wider alloys. (Cold air induction by itself will not achieve much).

Unfortunately only the wheels are easily answered - there IS some manufacturer of 98PCD wheels in India, I remember because someone here linked to them. So you must try some Advanced Searches in this forum. While you're at it, search for K&N as well. ;)

It is normal for the cast-iron exhaust manifold to have a heavily-rusted surface. The casting is thick, so it won't rust through. I think I would just get an exhaust shop to make up a replacement pipe for the section that has rusted. The cast-iron manifold is already a better design than it needs to be for the engine's low power output.

I don't know what to suggest for engine performance other than possibly parts off a 1.2L engine (such as used in the Palio). That might include the camshaft too. Maybe just swap the whole engine? The gains are not going to be huge, though. EDIT: I see that you actually HAVE a Palio... I guess you'll be able to decide whether the extra power is worth the hassle and expense of an engine swap ;)

I hope someone else can suggest where the parts you wanted are available from, because you definitely have the right idea - it's just that as far as I know, the parts (headers, intake manifold for larger carbs, high-lift cam) aren't available for the FIRE. Hopefully, someone else knows?

Hey Alex thanks for your tip. I dont really see the need to put in parts from the palio 1.2, its not going to be significant that is for sure. but what i will want to consider is getting a header and a cold air intake for a start. ive heard of this guy near where i stay who grooves cylinder heads to increase torque and performance.

check the link for the same. please could you mail me some pictures of your white uno to my gmail address - [email protected]

looks nice!

The camshaft to use in a small FIRE engine is either the classic Panda 4x4 (rare, gives you an extra 5bhp) or the Punto 75 MPi camshaft (higher lift/ longer duration). Also worth bearing in mind that the 999cc head has smaller valves than the bigger 1242 8v (apparently) so fitting the head off a Punto 60 engine would give better gas flow if you did want to tune your 999cc.

Unfortunately there's not a lot available for tuning the small FIRE engines, other than turbo kits, as most people would simply swap for a bigger 1242 engine or go MPi/ 16v. The biggest restiction with the 45 engine is the camshaft, so this is the first area you should tackle before worrying about exhausts/ inlet. With a hotter camshaft and a free flowing exhaust + inlet you may start looking at 55 - 60bhp. But for all the work and costs that entails you may as well swap for a 1242 8v 60 engine which would give you 60bhp right from the start.

I took apart 1998 Fiat Uno 1.0 IE engine and there was already 4x4 cam inside (4x4 was written on it).

I think SPI heads 999, 1108 and 1248 have the same size of valves. There was discussion in cinguecento/seicento part of the forum some time ago.
