I had a Boxer-engined Alfa 146 1.6 some years ago, (well, technicaly it was the ex-wife's) and it made a very nice, interesting family hatch.

The Boxer is a much more appealing layout compared to a conventional 'in line' engine for an engineer and better balanced - but it is more expensive to produce and service when installed.

Also, the 1.7 16v versions were a bit too heavy and Alfa claimed that they would'nt meet Euro.3 regulations needed for the late 90's.

Whatever, our 146 had a nice 'thrum' to the engine note, without being noisy and I would'nt have swapped it for a later twinspark version.

re

as above boxer engine is very balanced because of way pistons throw.

hence new subaru boxer diesel engine vey quiet and smooth!

TOMMY!!!

I was gonna sell my car and pay the bills, now I want that 155 ... you bassa ;)

Tommy, are you trying to get me into trouble? you know what im like for my 155's and the only thing the current one hasnt got that the one youve shown has is the engine! git git git :( i cant possibly have 4 cars again atm :(

ps... if anyone finds a decent 3.0 litre 24v alfa v6 engine, box and ancillaries for decent cash, drop me a line :)

Damn that 147 for being around now and not when bodge is due for departure! :(

The main advantage of boxer engines is that they are shorter (height wise) than a conventional 'straight' engine due to the cylinders being horizontal rather than vertical. This allows the engine to be mounted lower down which lowers the center of gravity and creates better handling etc.

makes them a bugger for spak plug changes though.
was chatting to a couple of petrol heads at work today, one of whom has a Legacy with the 6cyl 3.0 boxer engine. apparently it's a garage job for plugs...
