Hello,

Partner has a 2016 500X 1.6D, had the air con regassed today as had it 3 months and it was out. The system holds gas but the garage have said that the compressor is now faulty as it doesn’t release the gas when switching A/C on. Could it be the ambient temp sensor stopping this instead of the compressor? The reading is currently showing as 50c. Have the sensor to hand but it seems a bit of a pig to pull the mirror apart to cut the old sensor off and add the new one.

A faulty pressure sensor could be causing this. If it doesn't report the system pressure, ECU does not feed voltage to compresor so it won't work.

If the external ambinet temperature reading is anything different to the actaul temeprature reading by more that 5-10 degrees once stabilised then you need to replace the wing mirror / sensor. This sensor reading is used to control the climate control and whilst you would think that a 50deg.C reading would put the climate control into full cool mode this will not always be the case as I believe the cars other temprature sensor readings, e.g. air intake temperature, are probably correlated in the body computer. An out of range temperature reading fo the climate control will probably result in shutting down the system.

Tackle one problem at a time is my advice.

I can add to the above. My ambient temp sensor failed and the AC wouldn't work, nor would the heat unless I turned the temperature right up

It's not too bad to replace the sensor if you are careful and steady. I found this thread/guide is useful: Link
