Advice on HGT's

try and

I think the really nice thing about the HGT is the fact that it is a car with double personalities. this was said here in one of the msgs , but thats perhaps the most iconic thing about it.
When u drive it slowly and easy going, it drives like any other compact car and it is smooth thru the revs and soft. but when you want the power , just put your foot down and it will come to you. however , im affraid to admit as was said here also, the car [on paper] seems quick but not so in actuall performance. you have to REALLY thrash it to get it going and it always seems too much for the car to handle for a long period.

The power plant [that amazing 5cyl unit] is the cream of The HGT. and as such the noise it produces is GRRRRRRRR all the time. for me that is about 80% of the cars appeal, and of any decent sports car. it has to sound alive.

but as said, it ages and soon maybe a couple of years it will really get tired. its still strong now days against other cars and it embaresses much stronger cars. But it aint quick enough against the smaller hatches.

its a good car youll enjoy it , just dont expect to much of it....

Re: try and

Hate to admit it, but i agree with most of the above, can't really comment on the Alfa's as i've never had one...

The HGT should be much quicker than it is, this maybe down to weight or just the overall size?

Re: try and

I think it's down to where all the power is in the engine, it's got no grunt at all it's all high reving whizz which I wasn't expecting from a 5 cylinder. My Alfa 155 V6 is quite a bit slower on paper but in real world driving it's light years faster, for some reason the HGT isn't the car that it promises to be which is a real shame IMO.

a..

Bit of downer all this talk about the HGT. suddenly when you actually address all the problems ,you realize the car is getting a bit old and tired...

But you gotta love it...

Re: a..

...and that's the whole point! It has a soul unlike most other marques. :)

Re: a..

HGT Pro's:

* as a second hand buy its very good value for money
* relaxing cruising ability
* very nice steering feel and handling
* the noise it makes / 5th cylinder
* the high revving antics
* fairly exclusive as they are definately rare
* plenty of character, italian panache
* insurance group 14 (2 groups lower than a 306 GTi)
* great looking from all angles
* fairly solid in its build (for a non-german/scandanavian built european car)
* it has a special something that you cannot put into words, that demands that you love the car

HGT Con's:
* not great roadholding
* poor ride quality on anything less than perfectly smooth
* lack of low rev torque
* difficult to improve torque/power without spending silly money
* fiat dont stock certain parts for it anymore at all (for a car only 4yrs old!) and they make you wait
* ridiculously expensive cambelt change farce!
* below average servicing costs
* quite thirsty on fuel even when not even pushing (positively gulps fuel when using the power)
* little niggling faults mostly electric
* stone chips badly at front end

Re: a..

I don't really agree with the fuel economy thing, I always got INXS of 30mpg from mine and it was driven fairly hard. I don't think that's bad. The stone chip issue is a very valid point, they do seem to attract every bit of loose gravel on the roads.

think

Its probably true to all really appealing sports cars. the soul of it , partly or a big chunk of it thanx to the engine but its always something else , like the fact that it is rare, or italian [god love em] and the fire in the fiat brand , and of course the closnes to ferrari. and come on, we all like to belive there is some ferrari in our HGT. if not tech, then at least the heart.

but aside from that how many hatches can you really say REALLY, have something of a heart and emotion like the italian birds give you?

Not a lot...shame the stilo abarth wasnt up to the job..

The above messages were left RR, as I was in stupid mode on that day. I believed that maybe you had stopped being a complete ****** and started to post like a civilised human being.

As today has proved - your still a tosser.

Re: think

Well, I did try and be constructive but you just ruined it.

I won't bother with any abusive remarkds seeing as you already know what you are.
