I am currently on the lookout to purchase Bravo HGT and
wondered if anyone can give me advice on any major issues
i should lookout for.

So far have only driven and checked out 97 R Reg HGT
with A/C and full leather which i am still have chance
to buy in the next couple of months. The Bravo had 47,000
miles on the clock and full service history with no major
problems so far. Everything on the car was clean the
seller was asking for £2800 for it which i had to say
was pretty fair price. Only thing did't have was CD, it
had tape only.

Was wondering if purchased how soon i would have to consider
changing cam belt as i know Fiat say 72,000 miles, i was
thinking on the terms of say 60-65,000 miles to be on
the safe side.

Be greatfull on any advice anyone out there can give me,
I know the usually fiat things like the 2 keys and dodgy
back wiper electrics. Just wondering if there is any
HGT special things to look out for????

Cheers

Hi,

I have a 99 HGT MK2... few things to look for....

1) Make sure you get the cambelt done before you buy it or gewt them to knock big money off cos it costs between 600 and 900 to do cos the engine needs to me out. This is only on the HGT's mind you :( Most people do the cambelt at about 50,000 - 55,000 miles.
There are 2 versions of the HGT Mk1 and Mk2, someone else maybe able to give you more on the difference.

Thats it to be honest... CAMBELT.. CAMBELT... CAMBELT just remember that lol.

Other go get one as they are F**kin great cars

:)

I've had an HGT and my missus still runs it, i'd suggest when looking for one you look for one with an alfa romeo badge on the front a cloverleaf on the side and a badge saying 145 on thw back. Although I enjoyed the HGT it wasn't the gutsy car i was expecting, you do need to work hard to go fast and be revving to bo****x off it to get the best from it. I found the twin spark engine to be better and more flexable, but you live and learn and I know there are pleanty of people who use this forum who swear by (and a few who swear at) their HGTs, just take a look at a 145 before you buy.

if the HGT is unmarked and you've got leather and AC, £2800 is a v good price. Get the cambelt done when you buy it though - but if the seller's got any sense he won't knock £600 off as Fiat only recommend doing the cambelt at 70k miles

Good luck, they are great cars!

£2800 is a FANTASTIC price. Are you sure there's nothing wrong with it.
I'll be either selling my hgt or giving it to my mum soon, but i'd be asking more than 2800. Mine also doesn't have a/c or leather!

Although it's a similar milage, has all the keys and has just had the cambelt changed!

You guys havent picked upon, that despite the mileage of the car not warranting the cambelt change yet, the age of it does. Fiat dont just quote change 'every 72k' but they also say 'or every 5yrs' (i think). You'd deffinately need it doing, as R reg means the car could be upto 7 yrs old now! theres always a chance that because its 6+ yrs old the belt's been changed by a previous owner but dont gamble bro, just change it. Good luck! ;)

don't forget the real issue is the tensioners not the belt itself, get belt, tensioners and water pump all done at the same time

hgt

ive got a 98 r hgt, put cat replacement on it , pipercross induction kit , supersprint exuast , splitfire spark plugs , goes like **** but very jucie and great sound.

Re: HGT for sale

You mentioned the two keys, make sure one of them is Red! ;)

Usually you get 2 blue and 1 red...

CAT PIPES

I BET YOUR FIAT SOUNDS GREAT, MINE DID WITH THE CAT PIPE BUT THERE IS A POTENTIAL DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN. TRY UNDOING THE CAT PIPE, IT MIGHT BE COLLECTING UNBURNT FUEL AS THE LOWER PRESSURE INTERFERES WITH THE LAMDA SENSOR, THIS MEANS THE ECU IS PUTTING MORE FUEL IN THE PISTONS. THIS DECREASES MILES PER GALLON AND WILL CAUSE SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE. I DONT KNOW IF YOU CAN REMAP THIS PROBLEM, MY FIAT MECHANIC THINKS I AM A ******. ARE THEY ALL LIKE THIS?

Re: HGT for sale

Personally I like the "below 4000rpm" performance as it means in everyday driving I can gently cruise around calmly and if I want to drive like a looney I can crank it over the mark for some grins. :)

BTW I'm curious. How come you bought the second one if you hate them so much and think the performance is poor? Was your first one so good that you had to have another?

Re: HGT for sale

I'm sorry but i have to agree with RR on this one, the HGT isn't as fast as it should be looking at the numbers, i don't know why i think it's because you have to work really hard and almost red-line in each gear to get good performance. I did like the HGT but it wasn't blisteringly quick like i expected, it was very nice and comfortable cruising but i'm not that old yet, pipe and slippers are still some way off i hope.

Re: HGT for sale

...and I have to say a friend from work sold his 145 2.0l T-Spark and I was gutted but his comments were "It's slower than yours, handles much worse than yours, the seats are not up to much and it's spent more time in the Alfa garage than it has in mine".

He was still gutted to let it go but his life is easier now.

And this is not a pop at the Alfa (before we go down that road).
